2 dead GPUs, is my PSU at fault here?

Back in July I purchased a R9 290 from the MM and it was running fine for about 3 weeks and developed a fault which meant it had to be RMAd.

The RMA never completed on Powercolors side but I got my money back and purchased another R9 290 from the MM. This has developed the same issue.

Previous to this my 7970 was solid for about 12+ months with no issues.

For those asking what the problem was, both cards gave black screens and this:

I want to make sure my PSU is not the cause here and need to know if there is some software I can use to check its power delivery.

Are there any recommendation?

what psu do you have and what is the age.

have you also checked drivers

Should have added that in there really, sorry. I have a Corsair HX850 Pro which I've had for just over 12 months. I've used 14.4 and 14.7 drivers with my VTX 290! Both seem to be the same.

AMDMatt thinks it could be faulty and not PSU related, but this is the 2nd AMD card to do this to me - patience wearing thin!

Time to move to the green side. These new cards look awesome!

If further testing proves the card is faulty, I will definitely be going green, but what??

I've got my eye on a GTX690 on the MM but the new 970 looks amazing - Ideally need a reference card!

At the price of these new cards I would pick up some 970's. Not only are these cards cheap they also use a lot less energy and you would also be future proofing your system.

Wish I had the £££'s to upgrade my 2 x 680 4gb cards to 2 x 970 4gb cards. I do game at 2560x1440 and have to have everything turned up so SLi is a must for me... saying that, I wonder what they have around the corner 980Ti's, Duel GPU cards? I was pleasantly surprised to see the 980's under £500. :) :) :)

While I totally agree, I don't have the capacity for SLi being a micro ATX and the design/mod of the case.

I'd be scared to buy second hand strong Radeon (R9 280 and up) nowadays, in mining days ;-) BTW, you've got uATX case ? Improve cooling before fry next, "green" card ;-)

Possible that the card has died, any chance they were mining cards?
I think people aren't being so truthful when they're selling on the MM with AMD cards.

Just a coincidence I would think, the 970 would be a good buy right now.
Or take the opportunity of everyone selling off cheap 780's.

Don't suppose you have another system to run it in do you?

No I don't but AMD Matt has advised someone else was having this exact issue, it would bomb out on me playing CSS.

I may have a fix, which will save me money!

The first card was but the 2nd was only used for gaming and came from our trusty forum AMD Vendor Rep :D

id swap your psu anyway if you can,for a different make/model

just for reference im using an xfx750w for over a year with a powercolor 7970 which is oc'd just fine

Seems like bad luck mate, however if a third GTX GPU goes then I'd be checking that PSU like mad.

I know, but I seem to have managed to get it stable, it seems to be Counter Strike Source doesn't like the way the GPU's clocks change.

I don't really want to swap it out unless I really have to. Its a new HX850Pro which has been mint. I also have the cables braided and don't want to get more done.

I bought a Corsair HX850 in December 2009 and didn't have any issues with it powering anything until I sold it on Ebay a few months back.

I ran an i7 920 at 4Ghz for all that time as well as numerous graphics cards (no AMD cards), all either high end cards or mid range in SLI.

I only changed it when I bought a new motherboard, RAM & CPU bundle.

Thread Resurrection!

It seemed like it could have been game related, but I've had some issues this weekend with streaming over BBC iPlayer and COH 2.

COH2 crashed this morning, the GPU gave me the lines/boxes & flickering colours followed by a forced reboot.

If it comes to buying a new cards, suggestions? I game at 1440p

uATX isn't a great form factor for cooling - is it possible you're frying them?

I had thought of this, but surely the fans would ramp up to something ridiculous if that was the case - I know I've got a custom profile, but I've kind of made up for that.

I've even amended the target temp to 90c and the fan ceiling is 100%, but it never gets any where near that - 80-85c with 55-60% fan speed.
