Hi guys,

Can anyone explain what’s going on with the little crossover wire between the COM terminals on my old switch? I would have just copied this exactly but the new dimmer I’m wanting to install has the terminals flipped so I need a longer bit of cable to reach between the two COMs. Is there any reason I shouldn’t do that?

Any help is much appreciated, cheers.

In theory copying the existing (and I assume working) arrangement will be fine. Ensure you take a proper note / photos of which cables go where (L1, L2, Comm etc).

I'm not an electrician however so I can't comment on whether looping the common terminal between two switches meets code and/or passes a sanity check.

As with all the things electric however - This is the the sort of thing thing that can seriously injure or kill you. If you re not sure, consult a pro.

I think that loop is required. It looks like whoever wired brought it all into the box... earths, neutrals and lives so the common bridge will be the live in / live out continuation of the feed I think.
