My main aim is to use my nvidia 2070 super for VM gpu passthrough in Linux, and have a nvidia gtx 440 for the host, BUT I think it is because of a problem with my two cards, not how now I have set things up.
In windows only 1 of the card will work at a time !!! if the 440 works the 2070 stops working and if the 2070 works the 440 stop working showing a driver error.

*** Question ***

Will 2 video cards work together in windows ( not SLI ) ? , is my problem having two nvidia cards from different generations , new and 9 year old ?
Should I get a cheap AMD card for the host ?

AMD 3900x , gigabyte 570 master , XUbuntu , windows 10

2 graphics cards of different types should work in windows. I would make sure you are on the latest bios and chipset drivers. I would also check to make sure your power supply is up to the job. Does your bios see both cards ?

I think all drivers, bios etc are updated , it is a 850 watt psu and a 550 watt powered my I7 with a 2070 super, so don't think it is a power problem.
Yes , in windows both card show up in device manager , but one of them has a yellow triangle .
If I get one working the other stops working !!!!!

I may get a cheap AMD card , so it is a different driver base ?.

The issue is the 2 cards don't use the same driver (because the 440 is too old)

Look on the "Support Products" Tab for the 2070 Driver and then pick a card from there:

E.g. a GT630 or GT710 are the cheapest supported cards that would work, but for longevity going forward probably worth getting at least a GT1030 (as the older cards may get dropped from the driver at some point, whereas a 10xx will be supported for a while)

You could get a cheap AMD card, and there shouldn't be any issues with regards to them working together - however 2 NVIDIA cards is probably a "safer" solution.

Can confirm that a GT710 works with my GTX 1080 cause they both use the latest drivers. Not sure how much longer the 710 will be supported though.

I think both AMD and NVidia drivers get angry if you have the other vendors card/drivers installed nowadays.

I think I'm going for a gt1030 or gt1050 !!!
I've managed to pass my 2070 super to a virtual machine in Linux now ( the gt440 won't pass ), But found that if you disconnect the drivers from a card , that cards wattage goes up compared to a virtual machine on idle .
So it uses 40 more watts with the driver disconnected than a Windows 10 virtual machine on idle !!!!
