So I've had 2 job offers.
Salary isn't an issue. Both are close enough it doesn't matter.

Job 1
Fully remote,
Less interesting, easy
1 year FTC

Job 2
1 day a week in Bristol
More interesting, challenging
1 year FTC.

My partner may or may not be made redundant soon. And this is a consideration.

As if she does the fully remote role allows for a lot more options.

On flip side they are both the classic "1 year with possibility to go perm".

In this case I'm inclined to pick job 2. As it looks better for future prospects. And I'm not great in boring jobs.
But that 1 day a week in Bristol is not ideal.
I really wanted the fully remote role to be better and it be a slam dunk.

Any thoughts?

Probably the most 50/50 choice I've ever had.
If job 2 was fully remote it would be a slam dunk. But it isn't and I don't think it ever will be.

Job 2 sounds like it will be more interesting and will enable you to make more personal contacts. A one-hour commute once a week isn't so bad.

If me I would choose option 2 as the same as you boring jobs are not fun and I get bored and start looking elsewhere. Also as above one day a week commute can break up the monotony of working from home, did for me during COVID

Job 2 personally, nothing worse than a boring job, especially when you work from home in my opinion.

I recently moved from one job to another in WFH and the difference my attitude to working is night and day. (Previous job was boring as heck, new job is difficult and challenging but I love it, keeps my mind occupied)

Definitely job 2. It will open up more future prospects for you even if the FTC does end after a year. Sure, your work should speak for itself, but people like to also meet the people they may consider for other roles to get to know their personalities and ensure they aren't likely to cause friction in an existing team (amongst other reasons)

Option 2, I'd say there is greater options of going perm there than the other place. Not to mention it'll be more social and have options for going out etc.

Plus being remote all day every day forever is not productive for any human.

How easy is getting to the job in Bristol? even if a longer distance if it is a breeze, no problems finding parking, etc. etc. that is one thing but even 1 day a week gets to be a massive drag if you are constantly stuck in traffic, having to fight to find a parking space, etc. etc.

That's why you get a motorbike and join the cool club too.

It's not so much the commute. It's more that gf if made redundant would benefit from being able to move around the country.

It isn't ideal. Commute to Bristol is one of the more horrible ones from South Wales. It's not the distance. It's the time.

I'm also Inclined to take job 2 and if it isn't for me after a year the FTC allows an easy exit.

Regardless of the situation with the gf I/we do want to move soon. Probably out of commuter reach of Bristol. But again with way the world is moving so fast it kind of feels pointless planning too far

Assuming your goal after 1yr is to extend or go perm there - consider which company is most likely to still need you.

If equal, then pick the one you think you'd enjoy most. Personally I wouldn't do the commute, but that's me.

Think I saw something about train disruption in coming weeks between Cardiff and Bristol.

It actually may not be.
For the Bristol one I may want/need to move in that time.
For the other one it may not be interesting enough to carry on.. Or they may not require me.

Its a really difficult decision. I really wanted one to stand out.

In that case, will one look better on your CV?

The Bristol one.

I guess it's just that the Bristol one probably will be one year.
But the remote one, I would have the choice. If it does turn out better I could carry on. The Bristol one probably not. As it doesn't look like there's any flex on the office once a week.

If we move it will be out of commute distance to Bristol.

Right now.. I'm actually swinging more to the fully remote one.
The fully remote one could become permanent from my perspective.

But I don't think the Bristol one can as I want to move more rural. Or even further maybe to Scotland.

Also, ita possible it may turn out better than I think.

It may come down to that. The Bristol one can only be a year. The remote one could go on beyond a year.

Most difficult choice I've ever made in terms of jobs.

If you move too rural you might have connectivity problems and have to buy Starlink.
