I've got two lines in my house right now and want to cancel one.

I've had one purely for BB which my old work paid for but i don't want it anymore so i'm going to get BB installed on my other line.

I've done a line test on my 'main' line and it says i can have 3mb. When i do a test on my other line, it says 5mb!

any ideas why?

The "test" means squat (especially given it isn't a test). It's quite possible you'd get exactly the same service on both lines.

Newer line may be in better condition than the old one hence faster speed, swap the numbers over from old to new and get a MAC to switch provider then disconect the unrequired line. It's a bit of agro but it'll work.

remember new lines will have better cabling so u would expect to get better speed

Not necessarily. Newer lines might be, er, newer, but even that isn't guaranteed (most new installs use spare pairs that could have been lying there as long as the original line has).
At last count, new cabling was lower gauge so you'd expect a higher attenuation per unit length too.

Unless you have a fault, don't expect to get a visit from anyone.

its not uncommon to have 2 lines with different speeds at the same house. the physical line is probably different and possibly the length, the older one probably being the slower speed.
