Ok, so I’m finally building my own PC starting in a couple of weeks. Currently we have one 'family' PC in the house that has a modem/router (Netgear DG834) connected to it. My dad gets frustrated when I tie up the internet with my torrent programs, so here's the first question:

Would having a different modem to my new PC, using a different phone outlet in the house still make the net slow on the family PC?

Ideally I’d like to network the two PCs so I can transfer stuff between the two and use the printer etc. If the answer to the above is 'no' then would having two modem/routers (for example two Netgear DG834's) connected to each other cause a problem because they each have their own internet connection?

Thanks :)

You can only have one modem/router per phone line.

To do what you're wanting to do you'd need to get and pay for a second BT line and another account with an ISP.

arf, does that mean my only choice is to get a switch and have to slow the existing line down? :(

Thanks for the fast reply btw :)

yes, they both use the same phoneline. if you want seperate connections use seperate lines (if possible) or get cable for yourself and let him keep the adsl. or whatever.

No need to get a switch, both the new and existing PCs just connect to the internet through the Netgear, either wired or wireless.

As for slowing the line down, just wind back the upload/download speeds in the torrent program, especially the uploads.

Limit your p2p usage using the controls that are no doubt in the program - 5-10k upload should give decent download speeds.

It's usually the saturation of upload bandwidth that makes browsing unuseable (if that's what the problem is).
