Hey guys

Admitedly I haven't formatted my computer or my laptop in a good while so I may have forgotten to do something / optimise but basically I've decided to format both of them yesterday and I've noticed a couple of things:

Both of them are sluggish and hang often for no particular reason that I can see whether it be opening a web page or browsing through folder etc.

They're both absolutely bare (just vista 64 ultimate Sp-1 with all windows subsequent windows updates downloaded via Windows Update)

and Kaspersky AntiVirus.

They're both 4gb ram, 2.2ghz dual core and 2.4ghz quad core so it really shouldn't be a hardware issue especially with nothing installed except the OS...

Any ideas what could be causing both computers to be so sluggish? Did i forget to install something?

"Optimizing" usually ruins Windows. If its sluggish etc. then maybe out of date drivers are causing the issue, if not then maybe HDD on the way out?

It won't be the problem, but install SP2 on them both

Could well be that Kaspersky is battling with Windows Defender's real-time scanning

To disable it..

Open Windows Defender

Options/Tools

Scroll down, and untick 'real-time scanning'

I've not used kaspersky for a while mind.

You could try another AV, like Microsoft Security Essentials

yeah worth a shot, also make sure you have the latest and greatest drivers for all your conponets, but while the install is fresh try win7 and see how you get on, i think its a good investment and it brought new life to my work laptop that was running vista

Thanks a lot for suggestions so far.

Drivers are definitely up to date for graphics, sound, lan, wifi etc. I just let windows install the other basic ones during setup, like chipset etc. And Windows update doesn't show any more updates available and i think it usually picks up out of date drivers so should be ok on that front.

As for hardware, the laptop is only 4 months old (Acer 6930G) and the desktop is about a year old. It could be a HDD issue though the HDD doesn't make any unusual sound and in my experience if it's on its way out it usually gets louder and more whiney.

I'll try the Kaspesky vs Windows Defender thing and see if that helps.

Regarding Windows 7 - I was thinking about this but I was under the impression it doesn't run most of the games/apps we use at the moment. Is this true? I guess I could give it a try if you guys recommend it, I just really use basic things like itunes, web, email, and the ocassional game like CoD6, warcraft 3, etc.

no no no, win7 runs everything Vista does for me and im sure most people... buy a copy and try it on both you get a period of time before you need to activate.

i really can't think of any reason why you would find a clean install of vista slow on both... very strange, if it was just one pc well the answer could be anything, but both is strange

i used nod32 av and have defender totally disabled

Try installing proper chipset drivers. When I built my current PC I was very disappointed as it was sluggish as hell (Biostar TPower I45, E8600, 4GB OCZ Reaper DDR2 1066 RAM, 8600GT, Vista x64 Ultimate). I installed the official Biostar chipset drivers over the Windows-installed ones, and a reboot later the whole thing was flying. Worth a try. :)

I'd definitely not ditch Kaspersky for MSE, either. Kaspersky is light and has excellent detection, though of course nothing is 100%. MSE lets hella lots of malware through though, so I'd definitely not go down that route. BTW, don't forget Vista has a habit of being slow for a few days while the indexing is running. Maybe you just haven't reinstalled in so long you forgot how bad it could be? :p As above, try Windows 7 and see what that does for you if all else fails.

good point!

a clean install of vista does take a few days to settle down while it indexes, my pc hard drive was going nuts for a week
