Hey. Well, I have Virgin Media broadband. I'm getting a new PC upstairs and need to get that connected to the internet. I already have a router downstairs on the main PC I use for my laptop. So heres the thing, I know I got these options already:

1. Buy a Network Interface Card for the PC upstairs. - But I don't want to because I play games onlien and don't want to lag.

2. Run an ethernet cable from the router downstairs, to the PC upstrairs. - But I don't want to because I'd rather not have a load of cable running around my house.

Now, I was wondering if I can somehow run a cable from my Virgin box OUTSIDE, up the side of my house and into my room upstairs. That way everyones happy. :)

Is this possible?

I called Virgin and they said they wouldn't do it, plus the guy I was speaking to had no clue what so ever.

So anyone done this before and can give me a hand?

Cheers.

No you can't. That's a coaxial connection, on the end of which is your cable modem and in turn the router. You can't split that coaxial connection or anything like that, all you can do is run an ethernet cable from the router or go wireless.

Edit: add powerline to the options

Wireless is great here, use it to play CS:S and the like, I know a few people who use wireless with FPS an complain about lag drops but I never get anything like it.

Have you considered getting a powerline networking kit. You can get them for as little as £40.
It's still wired so you will get a stable connection and little lag.

The model number, or the wireless type was what I meant - there's no point suggesting an 802.11n card if your router doesn't do it and conversely there might be some benefit to a faster card if your router did support it. What speed's your connection, and what type of wireless card are you after (PCI/USB)?

You could get a NIC for pennies these days, but they need a cable - it's a wireless card you want...

So wireless card it is then. This is the router I got with the package: Netgear WGR614 Cable/DSL 54Mbps Wireless Router

I have 20MB broadband.

Probably try something like a Netgear WG311 wireless PCI adaptor then. I'd avoid USB as PCI is more reliable and the USB adaptors themselves are prone to overheating.

Also you're linking to a competitor there, might want to edit your post before a mod has to.

Thats only if i'll be using a wireless card right? If I choose to run an ethernet cable from the router to my PC, I won't need to buy a new router to max out my connection right?

So thats what I've decided to do. I need about 30m cable to do it. Is this the right cable to connect my PC to the router? Or this one?

Whats the difference between non-crossover and crossover cable?

wrt54GL router, with tomato
decent wireless card

i use this for gaming, my cs ping is around 15 usually

Thanks for the help people, appreciate it a lot.

Can someone just answer my last question?

If I were to run an ethernet cable down to the router, I wouldn't need to buy a new router to max out my connection right? That would be only if I were using a wireless card to connect to the router?

Thanks.
