Hi all,

just got a new cat, a lovely black and white tom cat. Really really fluffy and only has 3 legs. He is rather wary of our 2 dogs but they are slowly getting used to each other.

However, he decided the other night to pee in one of the dogs beds :)

Only a foot away from his litter tray.

1) Any idea how to make sure he uses his litter tray?

2) Any suggestions on removing the horrid smell of pee from the carpet??

I have cleaned the carpet 3 times with disinfectant however it still smells, febreezed it afterwards to no effect.

With my kittens I constantly picked them up and put them in the litter tray to keep reminding them where to go... once there scent is in the litter tray you will find they will use it... It takes a bit of time but at the end of the day they are only learning...;)

BFG's got the idea, our cat also used to do it in a corner of the dining room all the time so we put the litter box there.

I'm not sure whether that counts as you winning or the cat winning. :o

Although it is a good idea, if you can get the animal to associate something it was going to do anyway with the result you want (e.g. when training a dog if it is coming towards you then encourage it verbally and/or physically) then you start to reinforce the behaviour after which point you can hopefully turn the behaviour to what you want.

You can get a stain and scent remover from the pet shop which works quite well.

Cats can go outside the litter tray for a variety of reasons, so if he does it again I'd suggest a vet visit. It could be scent marking, it could just be confused and scared in the new home, or it could have an infection. When cats get infections, they associate the pain with the litter tray rather than themselves, so they try to find somewhere comfortable to urinate.

the litter tray might be too clean if you leave a little dirty litter in it, it will smell it and go in there. Also as someone else has said it might be used to different litter. Cats are the fussiest animals.

Not sure about cat pee but biological washing powder (without amonia) is the only thing that will really get the smell of dog's urine out of things. You need to get all traces out as the cat will then associate that area with his toilet if it smells like on!

1.

He's a tom cat, chances are he's spreading his scent around. Just remove the bed from the cat tray area.

2.

Use biological washing powder. Its the best thing for removing dog and cat pee smells/stains.

Is the Tom Neutered?

It's a territorial thing if it's in the Dogs bed. As we had a cat for ages, and as soon as we went visiting my mum, He pee'd in my mum's dogs bed.

But he's never done it anywhere else other than in his cat litter.

Once he had his bits chopped, He stopped doing it.

And it's definately not a confusion between his litter and the bed, as he still does his twozies in the cat litter

That's is the way you're supposed to do it, same with dogs.

Don't talk complete rubbish.
The cat doesn't know why you are hurting it.
It isn't intelligent enough to know what is going on.

"You're supposed to do it" - don't talk complete and utter *********
