hello to all, im interested in buying the asus p5w dh motherboard and want to use 4 drives on it
2 x 150GB WD 16MBc raptors in raid 0 for system
2 x 500GB WD RE2 16mbc in raid 0 for storage

ive looked at the spec for the board and the southbridge has 3 sata another chip has 1 internal and one external and another 2 internal(which is for ez backup) with this chip facilitate using the drives for storage or are they for backing up only?

i hope i have explained this adequately enough
and thanks to any who reply

PS
-the alternative ive been cooking up is to raid 0 3 raptors and add an old 500 i have lying around from another system.

why on earth would you want raid 0 for storage / work space
i thought the whole idea of raid is simply to have apps / programs load faster

iirc yes you can have two lots of raid, one on the ich8r(might be ich7r) controller and one on the EZ-backup(Jmicron?) controller. The EZ-backup controller is crap tbh so I would just Raid the raptors on the ich8r(red/black sata slots) for your applications/programs and have the 2x500GB drives as storage.

Hey up,

Yes you can do it, but its crap.

Main reason i sold the board and went for the bad axe2

Problem with th ep5w is only 3 of the sata ports are on the intel controller.

So you need to set 2 disks up on that,

and then enable the asus ez raid and put 2 on that, while the asus ez raid is easy to setup i found the performance of it rubbish :(

the idea of the storage raid is to increase read/write speeds, at the moment i have to old raptors (74GB 8MBc) in raid 0 and one 500GB WD.
I use the raid for system, programs and workspace and transfer to the storage when im done. the reason for wanting raid 0 on the storage drive is to reduce the moving times or even do the work straight onto the storage drive if it performs good.

p5w does not perform good, on the ez controller.

i do the same as you. But ended up selling it to a mate who is not going to use raid. Bad Axe2 all the way mate.

i like the rest of the features of the board and its good for overclocking as well,

there is another solution ive been cooking up and thats to use
3 raptors in raid 0 and just stick one 500GB WD somewhere

or two raptors and a 750GB seagate?

or what about getting a raid controller?!

if i have to get a different board the striker looks good but i hear that the chipset hinders quad core Overclocking..
