I currently use a Wireless card to connect to a netgear router in order to access the internet, networked computers and a network printer.

In my laptop I also have a NIC which i would like to attach to Network Storage Hard drive in order to backup the laptop.

I changed the NIC confirgured TCP/IP to network 192.168.11.* the same for the Network storage. This allows for direct access to the NAS for back up.

However when I do this and try to use my Web Browser i cannot access the internet. I presume that it is trying to access internet through 192.168.11.*

Mmy router network is on 192.168.1. *

How can i set up my NIC for local access to Network storage. And my router via wifi for internet and network printer etc..

Why not just plug the nas into the wifi router? Its the normal way to do it.

Ah I Guess so you get a faster backup, In that case can you not plug the laptop & pc into the router when backing up?

Anyway it just sounds like you need the correct routing on the laptop. I assume when configuring the ethernet you didn't add a default gateway? So the default gw remains with the wifi adaptor for internet access & to access the 192.168.11.* network the laptop would automatically use the ethernet interface.

EDIT show us the output of netstat -r

There arent any spare ports on the router. Also like you noticed, backup will be much quick with a direct connection to the network storage.

I think I have solved the problem. I have set internet router as 192.168.1.* and laptop Nic as 10.0.0.1 I read something about needing to use C & B class IP addresses.

Can't you just set the laptops default gateway to be be the IP address of the router ie 192.168.1.1 Also is the laptop getting its IP address via DHCP, if so then what IP address is the laptop getting?

Make sure you dont have the gateway or anything else set on the NIC, just ip and subnet then there is no reason why it shouldn't work.
