1 - is it ok to test 1600mhz DDR3 ram in a MoBo that handle upto 1333mhz?
only to test the ram...

2- the reason why i want to test the ram: an idiot build a mates PC and never put spacers between the MoBo and didnt sit the CPU correctly.

TURNED IT ON!!

Now am suprised it never went bang?! but apparently it did turn on.
I came along and rebuilt it properly. Still no signal to the monitor so i have brought it home and am on the gfx card now and thats just ran SC2 fine on full settings.
will the MoBo be fried?
and if the CPU isnt in would the MoBo make u aware of this or do nothing? i havent tried yet.

Thanks

1) Yes. It's fine to put the RAM there forever.

2) You mean he just screwed the motherboard directly to the case? I've no idea what effect that would have. Possibly killed the motherboard. If he didn't do the CPU possibly then it could be bent pins.

Does it beep when you power it on? Do you get anything on the monitor?

Yep it should just run slower, but you may need to start with only one stick to set correct voltages.

Yep directly to the case board... the green light still comes on and all starts up but nothing. No signal to Monitor at all..

will try ram ina sec thanks.

Why don't they realise it's not right when the I/O shield doesn't align up? Or do they just not bother installing that, thinking it's an optional extra lol

oh dear!! fingers crossed it isn't fried.

i think the motherboard simply wouldn't be able to post without a cpu, there may be warning beeps if there's no cpu but not sure. surprised the ram isn't fried as they are usual the most sensitive to shorts

I have no idea! he put the I/0 in and even tightened the Gfx card down! total fool mr "know it all" my PC just ran test on ram and seems fine and is now running on the PC.

I dnt have the speaker with me unfortunatly.
but there is no power light and the CPU fine is running in a funny pattern. I mean the power points will all have been touching the case when turned on I just looked.

so most prob fried... I can only check CPU tomorrow on the girlfriends PC as it's AM3.

Thanks
