Thats my first idea. Comments/improvements are welcome, but im abit of a noob when it comes to building computers (i know abit, but please explain why you have made that improvement :), knowlegde is power as the saying goes).

Here is my 2nd draft, after getting some advice from an irl mate (mattbrown91 on these forums) he says that intel has a better work per clock cycle, or something or other  . So he put together this for me (the motherboard + processor)

Remember i have put in bold the only things that have changed, everything else is the same..

All i would like to know is it worth the extra 70 quid or so? Or would it be better upgrading some of the components on idea 1, maybe going for 2gig ram for the same price as idea 2?

i like idea 2, due to that fact, that i've heard lots of good reviews of the new intel, and now much they can be clocked at :)

Core 2 Duo is VASTLY superior to an X2 3800+. They also overclock much better too. Well worth the 70 quid extra.

EDIT: You might need a slightly more powerful PSU. My X1900XT had a note with it saying it needed it at least 500W PSU. The X1950 may need less but I doubt it.

You cant have a PATA hard drive and PATA DVD drive, the gigabyte boards have only one IDE port. Get a SATA drive they are way faster imo. maybe even a SATA DVD drive i have had no trouble with my 2 SATA Samsung DVD RW drives :).

This hasn't been true for years.
/posting from a machine with an optical drive and hard drive on the same IDE controller

The OP should get an SATA hard disk anyway. ;)
