Myself and my son have 2 PC's, however they are beginning to creak around the edges, especially when my son wants to play PUBG on his system (System 2) with me. I normally play PUBG, BF1, Elite Dangerous, etc. (System 1).

System 1:
i5 4440
ASRock B85 Pro4
2 x 8GB DDR3-1600 / PC3-12800 RAM
256 GB Crucial M4 SSD
1 GB Samsung HD
MSI GTX 970
XFX PRO 550W PSU

System 2:
i3 4160
MSI H81M-P33
2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 / PC3-12800 RAM
120 GB Samsung HD502HJ SSD
1 GB Samsung HD
ATI Radeon HD 7870 (Tahiti LE)
Thermaltake 530W Bronze PSU

What would be decent upgrade route with a budget of around £300-350? Someone recommended buying myself a 1070 or 980 Ti and giving the 970 to my son, keeping the CPU's as they are but giving us both a very decent graphics bump, especially for PUBG. Over time I can then upgrade my own CPU and give him my current CPU.

Any other ideas?

"1 GB Samsung HD" You mean 1TB right?

Anyways, I think that's a good idea. Give him your 970 and get yourself a 1070. That'll do for now. When you can, give him your i5 and get yourself a 4790K. You'll probably need a bios update for that.
Both CPUs are highly hampered for modern gaming by their low thread count (and in the case of the i3, low core count), as well as low clock speeds. I can guarantee you that your low clock i5 is bottlenecking your 970 and will do so even more to a 1070. Get an i7 ASAP. Used, of course.
