2 titan blacks vs 295x2

I did not know you knew the guy personally to know what he wants or will use.

If he got 2 titans and a gsync monitor I am sure the low fps would feel a lot higher.

I know enough that any serious gamer will not be wanting to run maxed out at 30fps and dropping below in the latest and greatest. 2 cards are not enough to be maxing the toughest games at 4k.

Can he wait for a month? Worth waiting for the new 880's to show up in September, see what they offer perhaps

if the new cards are september hed probably wait but not much longer.

basically worked a lot recently to do this upgrade and is impatient .

seeing as hes basically going to be laying out 2000-3000 on two cards or one and top notch monitor thought it might be worth researching what to get :p

he is a bit more nvidia biased .

cost doesnt matter.

You have answered the question yourself

If the upcoming GTX 880s are a disappointment go for the Titan Blacks.

Something to remember though to get the best out of them you need at least 3 cards so you get to use all the VRAM on the boards.

If he is going to be sticking with 2 GPUs the 295X2 will win most of the time at 4K as it is not possible to get the settings higher enough to use more than 4gb most of the time.

/thread.

8GB vram plus the fastest card.

Not a serious option either as you need at least three of them and they won't all go on a motherboard due to the coolers. Unfortunately there are no waterblocks available either.

Having said that they are nice cards (all 250 of them, Gibbo bought up the lot) but once OCUK have sold them there will be no more.

He won't be running max details on anything that will break 4gb at 4k as 2 gpu's won't be enough to give decent frame rates.

I would personally go for some cheap 290p's until the next Gen arrives.

As I have gamed at 4K with a pair of Titans and seen frames and VRAM, I have a little insight as to what frames and VRAM is being used and play Titanfall with everything maxed out and you get 60fps and use over 4.5GB of VRAM. If someone can afford a pair of Titan Blacks, they could possibly add a 3rd as well, where adding another 290 for Tri-fire would be pointless if the VRAM buffer is being hit.

I'm not saying the above is wrong, but there is no way I'd shell out £1000 on

2 gpu's knowing I'm vram limited at the res I intend to play at.

Games now are exceeding 4Gb - poorly optimised or not, it's only going to worse IMO

The ability to add another card later is why the titan blacks would get my vote

Even though on the last page I gave a recommendation for buying now.

If it was my own money I'd wait for nvidia's upcoming 880, nothing worse than spending a grand or so on 2 GPU's then a month later there may be a cheaper or better solution.

But thats for all pc components. Always getting faster and cheaper. But since the 800 series are so close id just wait

True.

But whilst people can get Titan Black instead of GTX780Ti for 6GB vram, people could also get the Sapphire 290x Vapour-X 8GB for nearly £100 less per card instead. But as already mentioned...whether or not is it going to be a G-sync monitor would probably be the deciding factor.

Only issue i have with the 8gb 290x's is when there gone there gone only a limited run as far as i know?

You can not get more than two Sapphire 290x Vapour-X 8GB cards on the mobo because of their coolers.

The only way to do it is with the old style RIVE and use the black slot between the normal red ones and even then you are going to have the third card hanging off the bottom of the mobo. Worse still you are going to need a very big case with some exotic cooling to keep those cards cool. Even worse where the black PCI-E slot is not really for graphics cards you will get all sorts of setup problems (ask whyscotty and 8 Pack Neil tried it with 3 GTX 670s IIRC).

All of the above is not even possible on the RIVE BE as it does not have the extra slot anyway.

So I guess Titan (Black) and its Titan cooler would probably be the best way to go then I guess?

Thanks Kaap for bringing bad memories back :p

It was a complete nightmare to get working.

Had to use that setup for 3 680 Classies

Those issue were the final straw that made me decide to go watercooling :D
