My bro in law is looking to buy a new tv and because I am into my gadgets he thinks I will know the answer to everythig when it comes to things like this, he has his eye on the Samsung UE55D8000 55" 3D LED - http://www.totaldigital.biz/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4083&currency=GBP
when you see how nice it looks you can see why with its tiny bezil and is also 5" bigger screen, however...

I have said to him I think maybe he should also look at the Panasonic TX-P50VT30B Viera Full HD 3D Plasma TV ( this is the tv I want for myself ) http://www.rgbdirect.co.uk/ProductDetails.asp?SKUNumber=111613&Model=Panasonic-TXP50VT30B

I have had a look in the shops at both of them and they both look v good to me but then anything would compared to my tv, the plasma looking more natural and the led looking brighter. Anyhow I don't want to give him the wrong info, at the end of the day its his money and his choice and no doubt both tv's are very good. What I would like to know is which one would you get and why given the choice???

they're both really good tv's so with either you wont go wrong. I got my TX-P42GT30 2 weeks ago and it's amazing but I do have to have the contrast up full and i don't use the THX mode (the supposed best calibrated) because its still not bright enough for me.

I have heard more 'normal' (i.e. not avforums ultra techies) people say they think the sammy has amazing IQ also.

one thing that putme off lcd was screen stutter - i saw it on every LCD in action moves and it will drive you crazy - thats why i know my panny was the best option IQ is brilliant and everything is smooth.

Would always be the plasma, without a doubt!

There is also a 55" VT30 but its very pricey - £2500 give or take. There's a review up on avforums for the vt30 with a review of the 55" model coming soon last I heard.

If he's serious about spending that much then he defo needs to get down to some stores to take a look at them both (and others too perhaps) as its his eyes that'll be watching it not yours ...

I can see why he likes the Samsung as it is a better looking tv with the tiny bezil, but for once Panasonic have actually made a nice looking tv too and for a plasma its very thin compared to the last gen. Is there any other tv's he should be looking at this price point?.

He is more interested in in using it for 2D normal tv viewing and HD sky but hey you never know he may get into 3D as well. He has 5 ppl in the family so could work out expensive for 3d glasses and a dog that whould chew them up given half a chance and kids that would destroy them if left alone with them for 5 minutes.
When I went into pc world to view them I saw the Lg 3d cinema tv's and tried on the glasses the same as whats found in the cinema. The 3d effect was not quite as good as the others but still good and the glasses are cheap and lightweight, shame I didn't see anything in the league of the sammy and panny tho looks wise though, if only they did an infinia 3d cinema maybe that would have been a contender for him too.

Yea the LG Cinema 3D tvs are nice in that you get like 7 pairs of glasses with the TV which helps a lot but they work on a different principle - namely the fact they are passive like as you say cinemas use ...

For normal 2D viewing the plasma will give an awesome picture - and from what I've heard from avforums the VT30 has again reduced (note not eliminated) the 50hz issues (best seen in football with the centre line) which is nice - it's an issue on my 50V20 but I can live with it as otherwise the TV is brilliant for bluray and of course freeview HD broadcasts - looking forward to wimbledon this year!

That's a really good price for the UE55D8000, although I notice it's a today only offer. Some of the high street stores are selling it for £600 more.

LG Cinema 3D tvs are having a promotion on at them minute if you have sky and buy the 55" you get £400 back so your looking at £1200 and if you buy the 47" you get £200 back your looking at £1000 and you cant beat passive glasses,i have the active and cant watch it now headaches but tried the passive and its great, maybe worth a look aswell

Got a 55vt30 setup this morning, and its a beast, weighs in at 55kg's but its lovely, if only i could afford one myself

The samsung UE55D8000 is also a lovely telly tbh, infact its an awesome thing to look at, PQ is pretty stunning to on 2D, and the Smart functions are miles ahead of Panasonics offering.

He ended up buying the Samsung UE55D8000 and a blueray player and it still came to under 2k so not a bad price I guess.

Now I just need to keep saving so the vt30 can be mine:D
