Hi Guys,

Dont know how to approach this on.

I have a desktop connected to my internet connection via LAN cable.

I wanted to ad a wifi adapter and connect to a different network while still connected via LAN.

I was wondering how I could divi up which of my programs use which internet connection?

For example I wanted to put my utorrent program on my LAN dardline connection then I wanted to put my Firefox browser on the Wifi adapter so I can surf unhindered.

Anyone have any ideas?

when you say "different network" do you mean you have a 2nd ISP connection or are you trying to connect to the same router via wired and wireless?

If you have one router it will make little (read:no) difference that one connection over LAN. Plus it would be a right PITA

Need more info on what the two networks are. Are they disjointed (from each other), and on different subnets? Do they both have WAN breakout, and if so what are you trying to achieve with them both?

What will be on each "network"?

No, you can only have one gateway.

Personally if you are only using one connection for leeching then I would setup a virtual machine on your pc and set that to the "leech" networks subnet.

You can only have one primary gateway, you can however have as many as you like (to an extent).

You could also use static routing if you really wanted to force certain traffic out of a different gateway.

As I said, we'd need to know the full topology and the desired result before it would be possible to give proper detailed advice.

Well there are 2 separate DSL routers on totally different networks. NET1 is where my desktop is connected via CAT5e. NET2 is wireless and in a different apartment.

I would like to run utorrent through NET1 and do everything else which requires internet through NET2.

The desired result is to make my surfing faster as utorrent takes all my bandwidth and I don't want to limit the download speed.

Does that translate to "I don't want to lose teh speed on ma t0rrentz so I'm gonna piggy back unsecured wifi from the granny-n00b next door"? Just wondered. :p

hehe, no, but I'm sure you won't believe me...its my mates 2 floors up and I'm gonna pay him 5 Euros a month to use his. :)

I believe you. ;) Seriously though, you'd be better off saving the 5 euros a month and investing in a decent router tbh. Decent meaning an Asus RT-N16, Netgear WNR3500L or even a WRT54GL (if you only need ethernet). All those will run Tomato and work a charm for stuff like this. Bye-bye browsing problems all with no discernible impact on your torrent speeds. :)

If it comes to it, just set up QoS to prioritise HTTP and HTTPS traffic. If you ran Linux you could do this with firestarter (firewall GUI) in about five seconds flat. Win. If you're on Windows, you'll probably end up doing it through the router. Either way, save yourself the headache and the cash mate. I doubt you'd get a very good signal from 2 floors away even if you sorted the logistics out!
