Looking to upgrade and have a quick question please.

What would a pair of 512MB crossfired 4850's be equal to these days in a single card format.?

Thanks in advance.

There is a review knocking around somewhere that shows 2x 4850s to be as good as a GTX 280. The only problem would be that you would still have 512 mb which could prove to be a big set back with upcoming games, no matter how fast the cards might be.

is the memory issue really that bad? reason i ask is i'm considering going this route myself to see me through until DX11. I thought you only needed 1gig if you game at 1920x1080 and upwards. May just stick with one 4850 if memory is going to be a problem.

Not sure; you need it in GTAIV for high textures. 1GB Vid memory I mean. In crossfire the memory is shared not doubled, so you would need the 1GB cards for that game. I am sure it helps in Crysis to, the extra Vid memory.

I've got the exact setup, but I'm running on a 1280x768 monitor (it does actually run everything, including Crysis on Very High, so nerrr... ;0 so I can't really comment on the memory issue.

If you manage to score 1Gb cards, they're not much slower than a 4870x2... the 512Mb ones should be slightly faster than a GTX280 in most situations where grahpics memory is not critial.

Reviews of the hardware that are kicking around are mostly before decent drivers for Crossfire'd stuff arrived, but XbitLabs have one which is as good as you may get.
