Just doing a full upgrade from E8400 to 2500K, 8MB RAM, etc. I already have 1 4870x2 and wondering whether to get another for circa £80 from ebay to do 4 GPU crossfire or go for a newer card. I need to get a larger 1000W psu I guess as the 550W won't power both cards but even so would a single new high end card at around £300 be worth it given I already have the 4870x2?

Any particular reason you want a 2nd one? When one can do the job perfectly well? I still have a 4870X2 and don't plan on upgrading til I see what the 7000 series can offer. I have many of the latest gaming titles and have not had many issues graphics wise. So unless you plan on doing folding or something heavy like that 2 4870X2 will be a waste...not to mention you might even get a bottleneck from the CPU. And I think you meant 8GB RAM as opposed to 8MB :p Oh if only lol.

You are right 8MB was a long time ago! The only reason is to run BF3 etc at Ultra and it be ultra smooth. Will the upgrade from [email protected], 4GB RAM to [email protected] 8MB sort this with a single 4870x2 (no card upgrade) or will the card be struggling. For £80 it seemed rude not stick another 4870x2 in there but then I have to get a £130 psu so that's over £200 and got me thinking maybe to go for a 6950. Maybe logic is to to the cpu, mobo upgrade and just test it out first!

I have BF3 and while I don't have it on full max settings, the settings I have it on are adequate enough for me to enjoy the game as best as possible. You already have a dual GPU as it is with just one. Putting in a 2nd one as I said will more than likely be bottlenecked by the CPU. The card won't struggle. I love my graphics as much as the next enthusiast, but I also enjoy my gameplay even more.

So really, it's upto you if you want to get a 2nd one and then pay for a 1Kw PSU to handle them both. Personally, stick with that you have and wait for the 7000 series. If you do decide on a new GPU, then I would say a 6970 will be your best bet.
