Thinking maybe i should have posted here instead of the monitor section, sorry about dual posting, but here it goes anyways:

I'm currently running a single 24" Dell monitor with 2 X 4870X2's in quadfire mode.

I'm looking into buying a further 2 X Dell 24" monitors and disable quadfire for 3 screen gaming. Can someone clarify how this lot is physically setup. Do i just need to disable Quadfire in CCC, remove the crossfire bridge and connect the 3 monitors up? e.g 2 monitors to the top 4870X2 and 1 monitor to the bottom 4870X2? What would happen or what can be done with the 4th card that isn't used, could it be used for any type of addition rendering?

Also i'm asuming i'll have to set the 3 monitors up in 'Display Settings'?

I normally run games in 1920X1200 but i'm a little confused how games will make use of the 4 cards and 3 monitors? Will games then show an option to run in 5760 X 1200?

Any help to clarify how this works would be greatly appreciated as its cooking my noodle lol

Are you trying to use 3 screens to game on all 2 hence eyfinity or just use 3 screens as an extended desktop.

Mainly my aim is to run games with 3 24" monitors from the 2 4870X2 cards (effectively 4 gfx cards)

It'd be nice to be able to use the 3 monitors as extended real estate. Also i imagine i could switch from 3 monitor gaming or re-enable crossfire for the top 4870X2 card and middle monitor alone and have the 2 side monitors off? I told you it was cookin my noodle lol

you'd need a matrox triple head2go; or a 5*** series card as mentioned.

the sweet spot really lies with 3x gpu's. you'd be better off just getting a 4870 to go with a 4870x2...

Bah i would have thought eyefinity would have been supported if you had 2 X 4870X2's :( Surely if they can make Eyefinity work in crossfire with a 5970 they could make it work for 2 4870X2's

You COULD try a software called "Soft TH" stay away from Triple Head 2 Go, they're utterly pointless really considering you can get a 5870 for the same price.

you can only have xfire outputting from 1 gpu, you can't span multiple monitors with multiple gpu's unless xfire is disabled

5970 is 2 GPU's outputting via eyefinity to 3 monitors. But thats besides the point, i only want to be able to run 3 of my 4 GPU's on 3 monitors in 3d games.

That's Eyefinity, you have 4870X2s, they don't do Eyefinity.

I've got 2 24" monitors connected to my PC, they both work with crossfire enable exactly as they do with it disabled.

Unless you mean you can only output from one GPU (which is up to 2 outputs) when crossfire is enabled.

Short answer

with the 4000series of cards, you cannot game on more than 1 monitor

You will require a 5000series ATI card to do that using the feature called eyefinity

edit : the amount of GPU's/amount of cards/type of cards are all irellevent here, the only thing that matters is that the 4870x2's do not have the required feature

I've bought a Dell 24" U2410 for the center, and another 2407WFP to go with my other one so i'm sorted for everything now :D

Care to donate your lovely 4870X2s to a caring new home? :D

I am selling them both. Both brand new Sapphire 4870X2 cards, boxed with everything they came with and about a year old now. £190 each

That's not actually entirely accurate - gaming on two screens can be done on any GPU that has two or more outputs, however to game over three screens WITH the correct scaling and perspectives you need to have a HD5xxx series card to use Eyefinity ;)
