2 x 7900gt's in Sli or 1 x 8800 something ?

When SLi works perfectly a pair of 7900gts in SLi are much of a muchness with a single 8800gts, perhaps quicker in a few things (like 3dmarks), but not by much and not often. 7900gts do overclock wonderfully though which is why i've kept mine. That said, as much as I love my 7900gts, if i could trade them in for a single 8800gts I would. Dual monitor games don't work with SLi (in fact the dual monitor function in totality doesn't work with SLi) and though i've never had problems with it, the image quality in the 7 series is somewhat below that of the 8th.

If you've got a single 7900gt and are thinking of SLi, don't bother unless you can pick up a 7900gt for well under £100. And even then think twice.

There is a review online comparing Sli 7900GT with single and Sli 8800 GTS 320MB and more cards at Guru 3D and the 7900GT SLi is much faster than the single 8800 gts OC.

This is the case on occassion but as the 8800gts is so much more convenient and will be fast no matter what then the 8800 would be the card to go for.

I love my GX2 and with the two zalman fatal1ties cooling it i have got it clocked from 500/600 to 600/830 with it never going past 43 degrees under full load! At that speed it's performance will more than match an 8800gts in most games but those that can't take advantage of SLi suffer and i end up with performance around single 7800gtx levels!

DEFINATELY go for the single 8800 GTS
the amount you will spend on a pair of 7900 GTs is simply not worth it for previous gen hardware.
I would strongly advise ANYONE against buying a new DX9 card now, let alone 2.
With the 8600 range due out soon, and the cheaper 340 MB 8800 GTS, there is simply no excuse for buying DX9 hardware now...
Anyway a single 8800 GTS can do stuff that 7900 cards can't do, even in SLI - like HDR + AA together.
It also has a much better image quality overall.

Also you can always overclock the GTS - it can be overclocked to 8800 GTX levels, and then it will definately be much faster than a pair of 7900 GTs.
Really even at stock speeds it is easily as fast as a pair of 7900 GTs, and for less money!
