2 x gigabyte 7950 windforce vs 2 x 7970 reference.

depends if you value noise/silence vs performance, thatll be main area of difference, as you could clock the reference 7970s to spank the 7950s but theyll prob be loud, where as the windforces will maintain quiet operation whilst clocked

Really not bothered about noise.

I just wanted to know if they perform roughly the same when clocked to 7970 speeds and above.

As for BF3 at 100 fps, maybe not on all maps but it will certainly be great performance.

At reference speeds 2 x 7950s manage over 100fps in BF3 at 1200p with 4xAA. If overclocked to 7970 speeds you'd be looking at closer to 120fps.

And where does it say what setting they're using apart from 4xAA?

The Guru3D review here gives an average of 75FPS @1200p and we know what settings they used:

  • DX11
  • Ultra mode
  • 4xMSAAAA enabled
  • 16x AF enabled
  • HBAO enabled
  • Level: Operation Swordbreaker

Look it's simple, there is no reason to buy a 7970 with the 7950 on the market for other than to say you have the best GPU currently on the market. The smart man buys the 7950 and clocks it. I have posted results showing there is basically no difference between the cards at same clocks and going by reviews the 7950 clocks just as far as the 7970

Fair enough, though the review here shows the same 100fps+ result (at 1080p) and shows what settings they used. It's possible Guru3D used a more demanding timedemo.

Legit Reviews used the single player map called 'Rock and a Hard Place' for benchmarking.

This is what Guru3D say:

Our Battlefield 3 DirectX 11 benchmark run, here we are in DX11 mode with Ultra settings. This is the Operation Swordbreaker level where there is a good balance in-between graphics card GPU load and processor utilization, making this an excellent level to test GPU performance in. There will be levels that are a tiny bit more stringent, there will be levels and sections way more easy. We think this level is the best representation of the game engine though.

Make of it what you will.

2 overclocked 7970 will get about 120fps average @1080 and at 1440 on full settings I get 88fps with a minimum of 64.

7970's would be my call and with having two get the cheap refrence ones as the coolers are very good and also they will push all the warm air out of the back of the case insted of the aftermarket ones which leave all the hot air in your case.

Just my 2cents
