i almost forgot. it lights up like a xmas tree
100_2096.JPG

the 4 yellow led lights you can see is for each controller. if one of them is out the drives are out. 1 led to 5 drives. each drive has a led for show active..
there is also temp displays on the top, to keep a eye on everything

standard NAS drives (decent ones anyway) can cost about £100 per bay, and what this guy has done can do so much more than just a standard nas.

like the idea wouldnt mind knowing which raid card you used and where you bought the repeater boxes (port forwarding)

email in trust.

Thanks
StevenG

steveng not sure how to e-mail you in trust. if you could guide me to do that

realy nice i like it ... not sure about the standered sata cable then branching out on to the 6 gud sata cables .......wont u lose some speed there ???

bt that s realy cool .. bet it was a ball ace lining them sata and power connectors up

u shud make more cases and sell them ;)

i would make more but not sure if anyone would buy them.. ie sizes

so you ask why i want 42tb.
i started of with 2 tb and lost the lot 3 times and lost all my pictures of my laptop when my daughter thought it would be funny to stamp on my laptop.. not good.
i had a look at nas drives and was not my thing. i tryed a couple of cases from of line and ******s. that was fun.
so i asked a company at random if i was to send plans could they help. they could and are well priced. i started with somthing simple as there is a lot of money at stake. so i started to sell on all my pc crap.(i hate credit cards.) so i saved like made while doing my first design. this had 6 drive caddys. cost around £350
100_0948.JPG

this has served me well over the last 2years, its about had it now..
i played around with another design and wanted to play around with cctv servers. so i built a 4 drive 32cam cctv server, headless(no monitor or keyboard). i save all my docs and visual basic projects to this server. cost around £380

whilest at my farthers house one day he said when u thinking of doing somthing big then and said put all your dvds on computer no messing around with dvds then. i have around 2000 original dvds and about 600 music cd..
that got me thinking of my most recent project. 21 drives.
now i have a backup of everything. on my main new project. the best thing i have now put all my dvd and cd in the loft out the way. more room all round. i have linked my dual core hd pc to my 42tv and and done a link to media centre for all my music and dvds. truely amazing to play with. no dvd to ness around with. most of the drives in the main server are raided so no worry for losing anything again. i have also wrote some small programs to keep a track of everything. on the servers :D:D:D:D..
i love xp, server 2008 and atom motherboards.. there are some mega system out there now for low power servers..
for now im happy. but you never know,i was thinking the other day of a black box for HD playback i want to start purchasing bluerays:):):):):):):):)

motherboard upgrade

i have just finished upgrading the motherboard on my 20 bay drive to a Asus ITX-AT3N7A-I with 4gb ram at 800mhz
reason for this board is if it can transfer fast for hd playback at full scale then file transfer will be just as fast

man its fast now:):):):D:D

What's the power draw like from the PSU? I've never even thought how many watts my hard drives use up, but when there are 42 of them...

Dude thats awesome! I'm hoping to build some sort of mass storage tower for backup but I'm not too sure how to go about it:p

Chenbro and Supermicro do very large chassis for lots of drives... I'd recommend taking a look at those. :o
