Hi i am thinking of getting a gaming rig but really dont fancy a windows based PC as i just dont like them. So i am thinking of an iMac which i will find much more useful as i use a powerbook currently. Is the iMac a good way to spend my £850 for mainly gaming? or for £850 should i buy a custom PC...

any thoughts?

If it's mainly for gaming you'd get much better performance from an 850 quid machine you'd build yourself. However, if you're going to be gaming occasionally and want to have all the benefits of a Mac the rest of the time, such as security, the fancy GUI, the hardware compatibility, and the ease of use, I'd say it'd be OK. That machine should come with an X1600, an OK card but certainly not the greatest for Windows gaming.

If you just want to play games, spend the money on a PeeCee.

Apple are very strange by using a totally different card in the 20 inchers, I have a 24 incher with the upgraded 7600/256 GT which is a fairly good card and can easily handle all games available on the Mac platform at this stage. However, gaming isn't my primary use for the computer and it cost more than £850.

You have a Powerbook, use that for real work and then buy or build a cheapish rig just for gaming.

I only really play UT2004 on my 20" iMac and it runs perfectly with all the settings at max and the highest resolution...

I am not sure but HL2 and FarCry are again only available on Windows. However, given the spec of the iMac, running those under Windows on it shouldn't cause you any trouble at all.
