£20 in ear headphones?

Sennheiser CX300 are supposed to be a lot better than MX500 and surely you can find another £10. Since MX500 aren't canal phones they don't have enough bass, so you have to compensate with your player EQ. Mine don't fall out btw, but I take them out to jog.

Umm, I agree that the MX500 is not the bass head's choice. But they are good in it's own right.
I can't say that I am too impressed by the type of bass I get from canal phones myself. They are good for isolation, but they still lack the airy "slam" I get from open phones (not limited to headphones).

IMO, it is best to decide whether you want "open" or "closed" or closed phones. If you need the isolation, then the CX300 is definitely the better choices. If you aren't into closed phones, then the MX500 is still one of the better ear buds (although some people have indeed trouble to keep it in the ears). And if you are willing to use over the ear type of phones... Then look into the KSC-35 or 75 as well.

Any non generic earbuds is going to beat the one you bought for an iPod.

And if you -did- spend £200+ on an iPod, do yourself a huge favor and get decent earphones.

Makes another plug for the Koss KSC-75 - they are seriously good until you are willing to pay... a fair bit more money.

Took me 2 seconds to find 10 places selling CX300, one for under £30. As for whether better earphones are worth it, of course they are, they sound better. Some MP3 players actually have a very good sound (assuming your MP3s are at least 192 kbps) and then it's well worth pairing them up with quality headphones.

cx 300s are £40! for earphones! is that really worth it, as a replacement for the ones that come with an ipod?

Ones that come with ipods arent great and ipods aren't known for their good sound quality either so it makes sense to try to get the best out of one.

I think we can lay that to rest. The current iPod is not that bad of a source. It's not hi-fi, but no MP3 player really is. At least not between the iAudio X5, Creative M:Vision anyway, the other players I've compared to. But they all sound good, and they all deserve a better headphone/IEM/earbud than they come with. Add an amp to the iPod Line-Out and it does well indeed.

And, if the iPod wasn't a decent source in the first place, I would -not- recommend getting a good pair of headphones to go with them. The headphones/IEMs will only highlight the source's weakness. For instance, my generic USB/MP3 player is listennable with stock earbuds. But with my UM2, they sound awful. In every single way. Even the KSC-75 would pick up its fault to a lesser extent.

TooNice

If you want bass slam on ** UM2 use Sony ex71/51 tips - I find theres much of a differance between lets say £30 earphones - UM2 as UM2 stock tips to ex71 tips.

Have a look for my post at headfi.org how to do it. my user id is veggie_musician

That's interesting. Thanks! I think I might have an EX-71 lying around (not sure which earphone the SE W800i ships with). If I do, I'll take a look :D
