Hi chaps,

I've got a 20" TN screen at the moment but the viewing angles are pretty bad.

From reading articles/reviews an IPS/S-IPS/H-IPS (etc.) screen seems to be the best best.

It has to be 20" max though as space is limited. Could maybe just get a 22" in.

Recommendations?

TIA :)

Without doubt the best 20" tft ever made (and perhaps still one of the best tft screens of any size ever made - debatable)

Theres also Dell 2007WFP and newer 22" 2209wa which have decent panels

The NEC is sublime though, you need to see in flesh. It is old though by modern standards.

Sid, from reviews the NEC does seem like a very popular screen. Any common problems or faults I should be aware of?

Being old is not a concern - this TN is so bad that I'd even consider switching back to a CRT.

Photo editing and printing work is what this screen will be used for, and it's just impossible with the current TN.

Cheers :)

Common faults are usb ports not working and on/off buttons (the one on the front) not working.

That seems to be 90% of the warranty reasons I have seen on forums.

Just make sure you buy one still in warranty as one quick phone call later, you get a replacement delivered next day and they collect the old one the day after.

Only downside for you is that recently since it is a discontinued model, NEC have being shipping 24" wmgx3 as replacements which although is very nice, it won't help you if it doesn't fit.

Although if that happens you could always sell it and buy another 20" one and pocket the change ;)

Oh and as for Sid's comment on it being old by modern standards (it is only 3 years since they started making them), no other manufacturer has yet to bring out a screen of as good quality. IPS screens are still few and far between and most suffer from ghosting in games but NEC got it bang on right with theirs.

EDIT: One last comment. The glass glossy highly reflective screen on the NEC is not to some people's liking. I loved it and it makes the colours have so much more punch than other screens (even better than my new 24wmgx3) but not so good if you have a window or light source directly behind you.

By old I mean it doesn't have HDMI etc. which are standard.

The screen quality is very good, I would call it similar to my Hazro 24wi.

It should be excellent for gaming as well.

Thanks again chaps. I'm not worried about HDMI, no problem.

Greebo, I've sent you an email :). And yes, a 24" would definitely be too large I reckon.

He's very happy with it indeed; I'm very impressed with it as well. Incredible difference compared to the 20" TN we had before.

Thanks again for all your help Greebo, very much appreciated.

I've always said that it is still one of the best monitors ever made IMO.......

Don't forget to download the profiles from tftcentral if you have no means of calibrating it. It does make a big difference although it looks amazing straight out of the box.

I felt bad about the courier thing.

We've calibrated it with a Colorvision Spyder and it looks even better now.

I set it to aim for 6500K but that's a bit too bright for everyday use, so we've got one preset for accurate colour work and one for normal use.

It was very kind of you to refund the courier cost, especially as it was not your fault by any means. Did you manage to get the money back from them?

Still working on that one! Hopefully I will. Glad to hear you have calibrated it properly. I only ever used it with profiles. I guess it will look even better now.

I must admit I always found it to be a very bright screen. I maybe only used it on 15-20% brightness for day to day use. 100% burns your retinas out!

Yep. I can't buy a 24-30" screen because all the ones I've tried (Dell 2709, NEC 24WGMX3, Dell 2407) have been terrible in comparison to my 20WGX2, and unfortunately the 2490/2690 are very expensive :(

I'm tempted to get another instead of a 24"
