Basically ive finally got enough money to buy a monitor so i can get off this old 17 inch 4:3 samsung. Choice is between Samsung 226bw and Dell 2007wfp.

Sammy 226bw: Looks nice, newer and has the two extra inches over the Dell. A bit worried bout the whole TN panel colour shift thing, Blue LED power light being annoying and bleeding into the panel and the shiny bezel reflecting stuff and getting annoying.

Dell2007wfp, but A03 revision: Looks nice and should have better height adjustment, has a better panel, and more connections. A bit worried that its not A04 revision, and most importantly im losing 2 inches of visual space although the resolution is the same.

I have some questions that would help me decide:

1. What is the Dell panel and is it that much better over TN considering I watch quite a lot of movies.
Edit: Found out about the PVA & S-IPS lottery

2. What is the difference between A03 and A04 revisions of the dell?

3. Will I really miss the 2 inches even though the resolutions are the same? (considering i have 17" now). I've been on TV calculator and seen the actual difference but I cannot decide how much effect it has.

Edit: 4. Solved

5. Any other monitors I should consider for the 240 notes range?

Thanks in Advance, Sukh

Looks like im going to sacrifice the 2 inches for the quality of the Dell.
Im going to pick up the Dell in person and so need to check all the stuff before i leave with it and some stuff is worrying me.

Does it matter if its AO3 or AO4 and physically when i look at the monitor how do i chek?
Is Pixel buddy the best way to check dead pixels and backlight bleed?

And what would you do if it was PVA instead of S-IPS but a good price?

I had a look around the net before i bought my A03 dell and couldn't find any information about the differences between A04 and A03. If there was something major that was sorted in the new revision then i'm sure i would have found something.

I'm really pleased with my A03 and have no faults at all so far.

To find out the revision, look on the back of the monitor at the sticker to the left of the DVI input. There will be some writing on there stating what revision it is. To check what panel type it is, turn off the monitor and turn it back on again while holding the menu button and the '+' button. Release these and then press '-' to bring up the system menu. If it is an S-IPS panel then it should read something like this at the top of the menu 'V1B18 RT803'. I doubt you would get a PVA screen now though as these were used a while ago when Dell were running short of S-IPS panels i believe.

Have you ever regretted not getting a bigger screen like a 22" because im really unsure about whether to go for a 22" TN panel or 20" S-IPS panel.

Not for a second. In my case i would have been paying more for a screen with the same resolution and lower panel quality had i gone for a 22" screen. It was a no brainer really.

In comparison to my old Dell 17" it's much more vibrant. The 17" looks dull now when i look at it and makes me want another 2007WFP :D

Games looks great, i don't have to play around with colour settings as well now to get it looking good in games.

OOooo i think im made up, Im currently on a 17" 4:3 so 20 inch wide screen will be a big step up :) and im not sure that my X1800XT will cope with 22" and the dell does 1:1 pixel mapping which makes life easier :)

Just got to work out the best way to check for dead pixels, im assuming pixel buddy? and how on earth do i check colour banding, considering its AO3?

Please reply if you know i need to go pick it up this friday, me cant wait any longer!

Afraid not, its over 120 notes more :( I think the Dell is probably the best screen for the money anyway, still cannot get over the feeling i should be going for the bigger screen even though i would be sacrificing quality :(

I had a belinea 22" ws & I couldnt cope with *** change of colours from edge to edge so I'm gonna get a dell 2007wfp :D for 1 I've seen it running & its nice, sadly need to save another £130 now as I sold my 1 month old belinea for £150 grrrrrrrrrr

BTW *** Dell is good for dvd's due to the panel the 22" tn=film stuff is ok for games, back on the dell 21" crt now

Cheers, i emailed the shop to ask about if its a S-IPS of PVA, if its the S-IPS im set to pick it up on friday :)
Dont know what happens if its PVA though....

Love my Dell, and don't know how anyone could say it has washed out colours. It's not 'in your face bright' like a 600 cd/m2 LCDTV will be, but neither should it be since you could have to read text on it for hours from 2 foot away. When playing something colourful like WOW it looks very vibrant to me.

Also the size of monitor is measured diagonal, so there isn't a 2" vertical difference between the SM226BW and the 2007WFP, it's 1.06 inches vertically. I also went from 17" 4:3 LCD and the Dell seemed huge by comparison.

Having owned several TN+Film panels (although not the SM226BW), I've never regretted not going for a 22" since I hate TN viewing angles (all the 22" screens are TN). The vertical viewing angles on TN means if you set the whole screen to one colour, it will look a different shade at the top and bottom of the screen. Plus the colours shifted every time I moved in my chair even an inch, so I was constantly adjusting the TN screens I owned.

Having said all that with the prices I've seen the 2407WFP for recently, I would find the extra and get that if I was buying now.

its an extra £190 @ £407 on dells easter special, so i cannot really push it that far as im relying on pushing it a bit already to buy this. Thanks for the advice :) Im just tempted by the 22" being as high as a normal 20" but really wide and well the 20" not.

Because colour accuracy isn't as important in games, won't TN-film monitors suffice in this area? If someone wanted a monitor just for gaming, there's not an awful lot of point paying more for something other than a TN-film panel, is there?

Dell 2007wfp can be had for less than the 226bw if you look hard enough ;) and most people watch TV/DVD on their computers, well at uni they do at least.

I just (last week) bought the Dell 2007wfp from OcUK after comparing it with the Samsung 226bw... What can I say, it is an amazing monitor and I have no doubt in my mind that I made the right choice.

I got the A04 revision and after checking the panel with the instructions in this thread, it is an S-IPS panel. There were no dead-pixels either.

I had it running side-by-side with my old Viewsonic VX912 (a TN panel) for a while and the picture quality and colours are so much better!

I haven't used the Samsung 226bw, but I can honestly say you will not be disappointed by the Dell 2007wfp.

im excited, im picking it up on friday, i have a 15" monitor at home and my 17" is at uni, so 20" wide is going to be mahooosive :D just going to take dead pixel buddy with me like an uber geek and check it there for back light blead and pizels.
