Mornin' all.

My uncle is in the market for a new LCD TFT screen to replace his old CRT. I don't really know much about what's good and what's not so I was hoping for some guidance from you knowledgable fellows. Basically, he wants a 20'' monitor and the budget is ideally under £150 although he would pay more if it meant getting a much better monitor. This monitor would only be used for office type work and browsing the internet though so it doesn't really need to be top of the range.

He has been eyeing up this one:
Acer AL2016WB

His friend at work recommended this:
Acer AL 2051Ws

I've heard lots of good things about this one:
Samsung SM204BW
but finding in stock anywhere is proving to be a bit tricky.

So are any of those worth getting or is there a better screen out there? Any advice much appreciated!

Well how much more would he consider?

The S-IPS based panels like the NEC LCD20WGX2 and Dell 2007WFP are considered the best, giving good viewing angles and colours. But that's reflected in that they are a fair bit more expensive than the TN-Film based models.

It might be worth having a read through this -

Personally if I could stretch to it i'd go for the Dell 2007WFP. :)

Thanks for the reply.

That article was an interesting read, helped me understand a bit more why the price can vary so much.

The Samsung SM206BW mentioned in that TN Film bit of that article sounds pretty good, is certainly more in his price range and is in stock at *competitor*:

Samsung SM206BW £170.38

If it were for me I'd take your advice and stretch to a S-IPS based one as I'm an avid gamer and watch DVDs. Would it really be worth it for him though seeing as he will only be browsing the net, checking email and the like?

for office use, I doubt there's much reason to get anything more than the SM206BW tbh, you dont need the extra performance that other technologies can offer, TN Film is more than adequate :)

Yeah, that's what I fiquered. Cheers dude!

Spec wise the SM206BW seems to match the AL2051W so I guess it's down to whether he wants the speakers really.
