20 years - a stroll down memory lane

It was a weird one, if he was a troll then he was a damned determined one. Some of their posts were very well worded and detailed.

Fake or otherwise i generally enjoyed reading them.
Exactly. Having been here 20 years, I'd say he's in my top20 favourite posters. At the end of the day, 99.9% of the people posting here I will never meet so you're all just pixels on a screen anyway; whether you are real or not doesn't matter that much.
Going a bit Turing here, but it wouldn't surprise me if at some point in the distant future someone could come up with a Forum AI that would mean I could happily converse with no real people at all.

The GDZ/GDC experiment
I can't actually remember much at all about that other than it being a complete car crash. I think it was almost a case of, OK we are splitting this subforum, casual stuff over here, more serious stuff over here please (paraphrasing a bit and hazy memory). But then you'd have people complaining stuff was in the 'wrong' GD or whatever.

So Harley/Sequoia were the same person, though Seq did not confirm nor deny this. And then Castiel was their reincarnation. Maybe he didn't get perma'd for the dispute but for having multiples.

Having a quick search they both have the same "clipped" writing style - very few words between using punctuation.

EDIT: Though some of the older (as in real life age) posters also do similar.

It was interesting. It came at a time when disillusion was starting to rise, maybe with the advent of lots of new people joining and the forums becoming more popular. There was a perception among some that post quality in GD was declining.

A solution was proposed where GD
would be split into two forums- “Zone” and “Club”. Club was supposed to be kind of between GD and SC, i.e. higher quality posting and discussion, less spam, better behaviour, etc. Zone was supposed to be a kind of off topic area that could be a bit more of a free for all (still within rules though).

More were against it than for it. I was actually for it at the time, as some of us just wanted a better forum where we didn’t have to put up with so much of the tosh that was starting to get posted. The experiment only lasted something like 3/4 days before things were turned back.

I seem to recall that the number of threads and posts was minuscule in “Club” compared to “Zone”.

With hindsight and maturity it’s pretty obvious that you just need good moderation and standard to improve forums, rather than going off setting up new ones. Really good forums tend to become self policing. If the quality and environment is there, people will stay and if it isn’t, they won’t.

Few things I remember from early-ish days:
  • Randomly going to Halfords as a group the morning after a night out in Swansea, and putting tacky vinyls on WillGill's S2000 for a joke. I wondered what the hell I was doing there at that point (other than the fact I was relying on Fox giving me a lift to Bristol!) as it wasn't how I'd normally spend a Sunday(?) morning but I guess with a heavy Motors presence it kind of made sense. I remember the event being a tad different than I expected, but I was pretty shy in those days so didn't put myself about enough. There was some other meet not long after at Matblack's house(?) that felt a bit more natural now that I'd met some people before.

@Will Gill :D

Remember “Tom”? Someone else in Motors who was eventually exposed. Said he had a Z4 at 16, then numerous other BMWs. This was before super low APR rates, leases etc. They often seem to start with believable/semi believable claims, but get worse with time as they attract more attention.
Wasn't that a supercharged E46 330Ci?

Its amazing how many memory's came flooding back reading this thread, bl00 led everything, neon string here there and everywhere, fan bay-buses & black cherry keyboards being the optimal choice
MYB was a pretty interesting character, i did read the breakout forums from time to time but it was usually some nonsense about the rules on here.
Creased leather seats :D
Hexus and the fallout later on.
Members getting on trains to out a user who claimed to have a car they likely didn't (portable sun related i think!)

Oh and a forum member created an online pirate strategy sort of game that was pretty good by all accounts.
