£200 Birthday Upgrade

Another year & another teen hoodie telling me to "get a life grandad" at 33 :eek:

Anyway, as a ickle birthday gift, my better half is waxing £200 on me for some upgrades

Heres my spec:

Pentium D 930 Presler @ 3.6Ghz
Asus P5N-E SLI
7900 GS
4 512mb sticks of Samsung 533@640
160Gb Seagate Barracuda
Soundblaster 5.1
2x DVDRW
Unbranded ATX Case with 2x120mm Hipers & 2 80mm Hipers
Ezcool 550w PSU
19" TFT ( Happy with that )

Now I do know I need a new psu as I dont trust this one to go much further without frying my rig. I was looking at the Hiper 580w Modular.

I was also thinking on a better CPU. Maybe a 4400 and clock the bejeezuz out of it.

Any help in giving my rig a boost will be greatly appreciated.

I was looking at the 21xx range of the new chips and after reading many reviews on them, they can move some when cranked up.

They not Conroes though

One bonus I expect is the possibility that the 4xxx & the 6xxx will have the prices slashed on the 22nd.

It's the same architecture but it's given a different name cos of the lower cache (1Mb instead of 4Mb). They'll still hit 3GHz easy

I would get

E2140 @ £51.69
OCZ StealthXStream 600w @ 58.74
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 @ £64.61
Total= £175.04 + carriage.

Sell your ram on the bay and save up for a better gfx card (8800 series)

You would get 2.6-2.7ghz out of the chip of standard volts with the oem cooler, any higher and id advise on a better cooler.

the low end 2140 and 2160 are conroe just re branded for the budget market and decreased L2 cache but i have seen it stated in these forums by reputable members that either buy an e2160 or an e6600 everything in between isn't really worth it as the potential of the 2160's is sublime. coupled with a p35/g33 mobo that accepts 45nm cpu's and your sorted for the next wave of Intel's.
