£200 difference, but is it "£200" better?

There's very little point in i7 for gaming, go i5 :)

On the otherhand are you getting slowdown in any games as a 4Ghz E8XXX is still pretty slick!

Depending on the graphic card you using and what game you play, but generally speaking, the E8400 overclocked to 4.0GHz should be more or less keeping with with graphic card up to 6870/GTX470 level, and I don't think you really 'need' to upgrade your platform unless you are going for faster graphic set up (i.e. xfire 6850/SLI GTX460 or above).

What he said. ^
But if you are going to upgrade I'd go with the i5 route.
There is hardly a difference between i5 and i7 for gaming.

Thanks for the info gents

E8400 is cracking processor, it plays most of my games just fine, although FSX that i play a lot will like quad CPU.

I am looking ahead to DCS A10, and BOB Storm of war, they will both benefit from quad core CPU.

but my main reason for upgrade is My board, i have Abit IX38 Quad GT, it is a good board, but since abit does not do mobos any more BIOS updates are non existent.

I have ati 5870 which is a good card, but I do want to have setup that will take new gen of g cards when I decide to upgrade that.

My PSU is fairly old Antec 550 HE, great PSU, but will it be enough for i5 setup?

I was in the same boat the other week. I took the I5 root, as I couldn't justify the extra cost. Games there is not much different if any, and if you don't need true crossfire/SLI then I5 is the best way imo. Even x8 x8 there is only like 1-2% drop in performance crossfire/SLI on P55.

Overall I would recommend an I5 to anyone upgrading from an E8400. I am currently using if for gaming, a bit of encoding and general day to day stuff.

2 of them? :)
And as I mentioned in earlier post...as cracking a chip E8400 at 4.0GHz is, while it would ok fast enough for a single 5870, but a pair of 5870 in xfire, the dual-core will become a limitation and not getting the full frame rates that the xfire set-up has to offer. xfire 5870 would definitely need the power of i5/i7 Quad to achieve its full capability.

absolutely, you reckon my antec NEO 550 HE will be enough for

this bundle http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-023-OB
single 5870
3 hard drives
2 optical drives
sound card

cheers in advance

With a OC'd CPU bundle and the rest of your gear it should be ok :) Give it a go, your unlikely to be gaming hard and using both optical drives and all 3 HDD's at the very same moment. If you've had the 550HE for any length of time and are unsure upgrade it to a 650W for a little more headroom :)

I was thinking i would scrape through with it just.
It will be interesting to see how it goes, anyway, am gonna order the bundle and give it a shot with my PSU.

I will report back with results, might help others if in same situation.

Thanks to all for help.

The Antec 550W will be fine for a overclock system with a 5870. It should be fine even with GTX470 (which is higher power consumption). But if you are thinking of going Crossfire in the future, I'd recommend upgrading the PSU to a decent branded 750W at least.

Also, one thing you need to note is the i5 bundle you quote (the motherboard in the bundle to be specific) will only do Crossfire/SLI at x4/x4, so you could lose from as little as few % to up to as much as 50% speed depending on the game. If you can do or learn to do overclocking yourself, you can buy a 1156 board that will do Crossfire/SLI at 8x/8x, which will only lose 3-4% speed max.
