as per the thread title looking to upgrade my ancient dual core Opteron rig but on a bit of a budget main uses are photo editing and general office stuff which I'm not sure makes a difference at this price point! I may add a decent graphics card at some point for some light gaming but it's not a priority.

Thanks in advance, it's been way to long since I built a PC and my knowledge of the bang for buck components is well out of date.

I have a corsair HX520W forgot tit might not be up to a modern rig!

Feel free to point out anything that is just over budget but a decent upgrade!

Interesting I hadn't really looked at the AMD options, everything seems really complicated naming wise these days it was so much easier when you had pentium 4 V's Athlon!

Looks good, though the OP will need a GPU if he hasn't got one already. (That motherboard doesnt have on-board video)

It is a little confusing. Just best to look at benchmarks. Within Series its easier to tell but comparing Piledriver to Haswell Numbers are so irrelivant.

You have access to the MM, you could get an i7 2600 set up for around £200

I think I'll put up a wanted add and see what gets offered, ideally I want to buy a bundle that I know works well together as I'm nothing like as interested in this stuff as I used to be so RAM speeds etc are all complete unknowns to me for anything past a core 2!

Thanks for the advice all, I shall see how the second hand offerings compare benchmark wise with what I can get new and make a decision based on that.
