I turn to this wise place for more computer related advice

I am looking to do a major upgrade to my system, ideally the CPU/MOBO

Currently I'm using an Athlon XII 250 with 3GB of DDR2 at 1066MHZ

My operating system is Windows XP 32bit

I'm a student, I work as a video director/cameraman/editor, for my own company, WakaYoda Productions; so anything that works well with Adobe CS4/5 would be great.

I also use the pc for gaming but I see a mobo/cpu upgrade as the primary stage to step up first, since a GPU is a plug and play component.

Will be upgrading to Windows 7 at the same time as the new hardware :D this budget is purely hardware based, excluding the costs of a new hard drive for windows.

So my question is do I got for a Phenom or an i5/i3?

Or on the other hand would it be better to up the GPU first then wait for the next generation of CPUS to push the price down of the current offerings.

Eagerly await your advice :p

If you already have an AM2+/AM3 mobo then check it can support a Phenom and drop a X6 in there! (performance in games will be slightly less than an X4 but thats not its main use).

i5 build will cost too much and perform about the same as an X6 for editing.

I'd also upgrade the OS as that can give a decent performance upgrade and you can drop more ram in there at a later date

As above, pop in x6 and you'll fly away, up RAM to 4GB as well.

If it doesn't support these, then an Athlon II X4 will provide you with a huge boost as well for a fraction of the price.

The x4 comes out at around 80quid so you'll have some cash left for RAM and GPU or just save it up for bulldozer build next year if you're serious about editing/encoding.

thanks guys, will probably get the X6 + Windows 7, hopefully more in the future, since I've started to get people ask me for live shoots + music videos. :D
