£200 GPU for 1080p

New I would go AMD 4GB R9 380 for sub £200, unless you play a limited number of games that still appear to heavily favour Nvidia.

all people saying r9 380 cant do 60fps max at 1080p have no idea you can overclock sapphire r9 380 nitro to 1100mhz+ and it will do 60fps easily

its such a good card

I mean, it totally depends on the game and the settings. You're not going to be getting a locked 60fps in The Witcher 3 for example, unless you're dropping down to medium settings. In general I'd agree that yes, an R9 380 is the sweet spot for 1080p, especially if you're willing to compromise on having everything maxed out, but it has its limitations.

Seriously, bag a used 290x/970 and you'll be a happy cat:p A 970 at 1500mhz is still a force to be reckoned with and will allow you to play most current games at very decent settings.

Thanks for the advice all.

Are AMD cards as prone to coil whine as the Nvidia 9 series? I'm a bit worried about this :/

None currently that I know of. Some of of the FuryX's have issues with pump noise but as thats so far out of your price bracket I wouldn't worry about it. Neither my previous 7950 or current 290 have whine issues, I did have a 4870x2 that oddly had whine not from the card but from the PSU, though neither subsequent cards have had issues with the same unit.

has anyone had coil whine from a 290/390? Seriously?

All cards are prone to it however nVidia cards do seem to be more prone to coil whine. So you can't guarantee you wont get coil whine unless you get a card with high end chokes. But you mainly get coil whine with higher FPS, your aiming for 60FPS by the sounds of it so i wouldn't worry about it too much.
Anyway i would try your best to get a 390 if you can! beats a 970 and has much more Vram! and absolutely demolishes the 960!

A 4gb 380 Nitro from Sapphire would be my under 200 quid brand new card choice. Secondhand a 290x or 970.

However I'd look in the Overclockers clearance section too.

In my opinion it would be worth waiting while you save up the extra money needed for a Sapphire 390 Nitro.

It's the current performance for value king IMO.

It's completely pointless to stretch to a 390 at his budget and res. It isn't consistently faster than a 970 as it depends on the game. The difference is 1-3fps, either for the 970 or the 390. He'll be paying more for vram he can't even use.

If he had around £300 to blow, then I'd suggest the 390 (unless he had a clear preference towards Nvidia) as both can be had for similar money.

Otherwise, a new 390 has nothing on a used 970 except warranty (especially at 1080p). He'll be turning down settings way before hitting the vram ceiling anyways:p

EDIT: Unless, of course, the OP can up his budget, in which case a 390 should do the trick;p Personally, I'd get the cheapest card possible and put the rest of the money towards a new GPU when it's time to upgrade again.
