I'm currently trying to put together a low spec system for my mother, who's current computer is as good as dead. She'll only be using it for the web, the odd dvd and some word processing. All that's needed is the base unit, shuttle or midi tower - it doesn't really matter.
However, here's the tricky bit. She doesn't want to spend a whole lot on it, so the budget's £200 max! I can get the parts VAT free, so bear that in mind.
I don't have time to spec up a system at the moment, so if anyone could do me this wonderful favour then they'll receive a ton of good karma.

Aye but:
I can get the parts VAT free, so bear that in mind.
and if for example you change the HDD and CD/DVD to:
Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 80GB ATA-133 2MB Cache - OEM (0A30210) (HD-015-IB)
£23.50
NEC CB-1100B CDRW/DVD Combi Drive (Beige/Black) - OEM (CD-039-NE)
£13.50

It is then under £200 including delivery, excluding VAT.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3200BPBOX) (CP-118-AM) -- £49.95

Asus Vintage V2-AE1 Barebones System - AMD Socket 939 (FS-030-AS) -- £54.95

GeIL 512MB (2x256MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5 (GE5123200BHDC) (MY-004-GL) -- £33.95

Samsung SpinPoint P HD080HJ 80GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-023-SA) -- £25.95

NEC ND4570 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM (CD-030-NE) -- £21.95

256mb RAM is going to get you precisley nowhere :p

Excellent, thanks a million folks. It'll be running Xp Pro, so I'll probably go for 512mb memory.
Thanks again!

Motherboard has on-board graphics so no graphics card. The case comes with a psu. Also if she only wants the comp for basic things then (if you have one) why not put win 98 on so it should run faster shouldnt it???

out of curiousity why do you get the parts VAT free (cause your mum is over a certain age?? you work there??)

have you thought about putting linux onto her old machine to extent its life. Depending on the specs of it of course. If its well old then an upgrade is the way forward

Why put in an ATA hard drive (And an ATA-100 one at that) instead of a SATA drive?

No it won't, Windows 98 won't support the true speed of the newer hardware and also Microsoft have oficially stopped support for it :)

Fraid I don't have 98 anywhere, and as for Linux, I've never used it (the shame..) and she's not the most computer literate person there is.

The specs here are mostly what I was aiming for, so I'll mix and match. Thanks again folks.
