I am in the market for a new PSU, my old Bequiet Dark Power 850W has served me well for the last 5-6 years, but it's time to get something that can run quietly. I don't mind spending around £200, possibly a bit more.

I did purchase and try an EVGA P2 850W which is meant to only turn the fan on under load, but for some reason even sat in Windows browsing the internet it would spin the PSU fan up fairly often, and that fan was loud. My power monitor said it was only using 80-120W at idle condition, so it may have been spun up by some kind of ambient temp being hit.

I'd love to get something like the fanless Seasonic PRIME Fanless Titanium Modular 600W but I would be concerned about it overheating with little airflow in my Lian Li 011 Dynamic case.

Maybe something in the Seasonic Ultra series? I don't think I'd need more than 650W but I guess bigger could mean better if the fan spins up less often.

So, a bit like my Gigabyte RTX 2080 Ti? :)

What do you have in your PC? It may well be that 600W is more than enough.

I have a SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 850W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black, purchased to cope with SLI Titan X cards, which (ironically) is quieter in Auto mode than Eco mode.

The EVGA P2 is made by superflower, and to be honest I wasn't impressed with it. I'd probably avoid them for my next one.

I have the following:

MSI RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio (this turns fans off at idle and I've never heard it spin them up at idle).
i7 6700K @ 4.5Ghz
16GB Corsair Vengrance RGB Pro @ 3200mhz
Samsung 970 EVO 500GB NVME

I'd assume 600W would be fine for my load profile but I'd have some concerns on the airflow to that PSU as it would be more or less non-existent. I would like to upgrade the CPU/Motherboard in the future (maybe something along the lines of the 9700K) but that could be a little way out, PSU upgrade should be in place for at least another 5-6 years I hope, so I'd want something that would see me through a few changes/upgrades.

I don't anticipate I would add SLI in the future.

Yep the Prime ultra series looks good in general, not cheap but I don't mind paying a bit more for quality here.

Have sameone in 850watt if like? i can set it up as not installed it yet and video it so can hear it running? either out or in case as will have to run to refill cooling loop as going to de flea it as fluids been in it a long while so a do all/most of the jobs at once! could maybe post here or whatsapp

Would be grand if you could, link here is fine. You can upload unlisted video to youtube if you need somewhere to host it.

The only other one I might consider would be one of the Corsair models, apparently they are decent. I think the HX series should be worth a consideration but unsure how they'd compare to the seasonic ones.

Also interestingly the newer seasonic ultra versions aren't that much different to the non ultra "prime" ones, and indeed the focus platinum ones are still well regarded. I guess I'll need to check some reviews and prices.

Doesn't that have a switch for fan off untill it needs turning on?

Hi well plugged it together! out of the case with leads and lcd tester gadget Fan spins up then thought had switched it's self off as dies right back so Silent!

That's easy part!!! If you have a case bigger than a hamster cage your Bolxied ive a full ATX case 24pin just about reaches the plug so no cable routing!.Sata leads since when have HD's sat on the PSU? so f'in short no matter if have PSU at top or bottom won't reach only saving grace i have is using a switcher unit so hopefully cables on that will reach to them.
Molex well just Forget them as they ain't going anywhere so looks like a weekend with the soldering iron is in store!!!

What a F'in show with an expensive PSU! Probably where save the cash along with that Hung fung Dung fan they was on about in another post?
My enermax cables plenty long enough.

Any other ideas on cables?

Yes it's the eco mode. My theory was that it really shouldn't be turning on that often.

I don't know if mine was just faulty, but it would spin up every few minutes just sat in Windows.

It was far from quiet when it did choose to spin up :(

you can get after market cables but they don't sound cheap to me.

I have ordered the Seasonic 850W Prime Ultra 850W Titanium in the end. It's definitely overkill but I hope the quality is there this time.

Hi just hope you have a "Tiny" Hamster box is all i can say!!!

The fan must ramp up as needed as starts with a burst which need to or burn out then slows right down i'd thought it had died but Der was still getting readings!
Does stay alive a fair while once powers away mind This Enermax Revo does also and that's been faultless i got it 2nd hand quite a few years back!

There should be a hybrid mode button on it, have you turned it on? If so then the fan should only spin up under load.

Not a hamster cage, but my case has the PSU directly behind the motherboard tray, the cables don't need to stretch too far. See: https://i.imgur.com/Vqh6OcEh.jpg

That looks ok i looked at that case other day as one came up for sale mind did bid on the jumbo case WX 888? like tow case side by side!

found some cables OC does quite a few variations! so can have a braided kit which could be better than these liquorice sticks.
