Can it be done?

A mate is wanting one for a media PC, but doesn't want to spend any more than £200.

The case needs to be small, and white or silver - not black.

All it needs to be able to do is play XviDs.

An faulty xbox - crystal edition (original one, not 360) you can get hold of for £20-£30 , go for a night out on the rest of the cash :)

Xbox Media Centre is probably the best one you will ever find. The only reason I have gone to a "real" htpc, is because the Xbox doesn't output HD.

edit: plays ANYTHING no need for any updates, even RAR files, that has not been "unrared" ;)
edit2 : mate has 2 x 750 GIG hdd's in his working just fine

Sounds cool, have a spare xbox sat here doing nothing either, only thing is all this stuff sounds way over my head.

It is VERY daunting, when you read the tutorials for the first time, but once someone has showed you how to do it, it really cannot be easier.
No needs for chipping anymore, just flash the current bios chip you have, and voila :)

I'll have a dig and i'll email you if you want, a nice tuturial, that isnt overwhelming

Oh cool, i reckon i'd do a softmod as it looks like it'll be cheaper, and i've seen a place in town selling mechassualt, splinter cell and agent under fire for around £3 each so that shouldn't be a problem.

But yes, a detailed explanation would be great cheers, [email protected] ;) Thank you :D

I actually kind of sketchily managed it myself. Got hold of splinter cell and mechassault for 50p and £5 respectively in town. Downloaded an Itools softmod and soldered a usb socket into the insides of my xbox. Reprogrammed a memory pen to think it was an action replay cartridge, and used a hacked AR software package to put the files onto memory pen, which in turn went into the usb of the xbox.

I now have XBMC running as an application on my xbox (not managed it as the main dashboard yet) and it seems to be quite good indeed, makes all my really compressed biking vids look much clearer. Only problem i'm having is it won't play certain xvid files (battlestar galactica pilot episodes), it also doesn't seem to read DVD-R discs with several 700mb movie files on... which is quite irritating, just says the drive is busy.

Found something called an Auto-Installer-Deluxe though, which looks to be very good indeed.

Very weird that it wont playt those files, never ever found a file it couldn't play!!
Promise I'll find that one i liked... check this space
