Thanks to all who post in these "spec" threads!!

I'm upgrading an Athlon XP3000 set-up.
I've got a £200 budget for:
Power supply
Motherboard
RAM
CPU
Card Reader (not desperately important)

I can use the old AGP FX5200 graphics card or on-board? It is only really a net-surfing machine, no gaming or encoding stuff.

Is there any point in going for E4500 above E2180 for this type of system? It won't be overclocked as the owner knows nothing about that, so must be stable and reliable.

Thanks!!

How about using a barebones system:

Asus Vintage V3-P5945GC Barebones System - Intel Core 2 Duo (LGA775) £54.99
(£64.61) £54.99
(£64.61)
Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail £48.99
(£57.56) £48.99
(£57.56)
OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £23.99

Something like this might do, the onboard graphics is probably about as worthwhile as the FX5200 is by now.

From the amount of posts on here about the E2xxx series CPUs these can be very stable when OC so I wouldnt rule it out. Performance for pound they appear tops.

The motherboard has died, so advised the owner to upgrade instead of trying to get a new board for socket A technology.
Thanks a lot for the above spec lists, are any of the 4*00 cpu's worth going for?

If you can get an E4X00 CPU of the same clock speed as an E2XX0 CPU at about the same price then it is probably worth it but the additional cache doesn't make enough of a difference to warrant £20 as far as I'm concerned.

There you go, it fits in the budget if you were to use the barebones, you may not see much benefit from the extra cache now, but it may come in handy in the future.
