£2000 car scrappage scheme

Lord Mandelson is preparing to put a £2,000 bounty on used cars in an attempt to stimulate the motor industry.

Under the proposed stimulus package, drivers would be able to turn in their car, which must be at least nine years old, and get a £2,000 discount on the purchase of any new or one-year-old car bought at a dealership in Britain.

What do people think to the idea?

Surely they would be better giving back the money that the lost the owners in depreciation when they announced new car taxes? Surely cars depreciated the most during this period?

As far as I read it was only as a trade-in against certain eco-friendly cars and hence is of little/no interest.

If its a perfectly good £1000 25 year old car (which my Mk1 is) then the waste of scrapping it and buying a new one is ridiculous.

It is totally backwards on the green malarky, which we all know the government doesnt care about anyway. You can bet that when this scheme is launched it will be advertised as being green though, which it totally isnt

IF anything this will make the used car market even more competitive as everyone will be going after 10+ year old cars at bargain prices, get a £50 banger and get 2k off a new/1yr old car.

I can only assume that a requirement of this certificate will be proof of ownership for a good few years at the very least. I cant see how else it can work?

I still cannot work this out, i for example have tons of address' i could use. I also have plenty of space for a yard of bangers awaiting elligability for any length of ownership criterion.

1) Buy £50 car
2) Take £50 to recycling centre and collect £2k cert
3) Jez Auto's (1) Ltd sells 1 year old car for trade book to Jez Auto's (2) Ltd, & collects £2000 govt grant
4) Take another £50 car to recycling centre and collect £2k cert
5) Jez Auto's (2) Ltd sells 1 year old car for trade book to Jez Auto's (1) Ltd, & collects £2000 govt grant

Replace Jez Auto's 1 and 2 with private "individuals" if restrictions on trade sales are in place.

How is this going to be avoided? It seems to easy and i cannot imagine how they could close all loop holes.

Jez's Autos won't be able to buy a £50 banger any more because all the £50 bangers are now worth loads more because people want to cash them in.....

Same happened when scrap went up to £150 for a car in the summer, there were no cheap cars *anywhere* because everyone was weighing them in instead!

Doesn't make any sense. Surely there are better schemes to tempt the thrifty into buying new. If only cars didn't depreciate to such a ridiculous extent, I'm sure even hardcore 2nd hand buyers would be extremely tempted.

The Germans are already doing this.

Their government is coughing up 2500Euros towards every new car purchased when a vehicle that is over 9 years old is scrapped. It is supposed to encourage people to buy greener cars and take those with higher emissions off the road.

Obviously this would be dependant upon what you bought. It would also push funds back through the motor industry although a lot of mechanics may suffer for it.

Anyway....BMW apparently love this strategy and want the UK to do the same thing. Mr Mandelson didn't come up with this idea, he has just adapted it.
