Hey everyone.

My friend has a 2000 (X) 1.2 Renault Clio, its well looked after etc.

Its currently with a local garage though who cant diagnose a problem so I was hoping perhaps someone here might have come across the same thing before. I cant go and try any of the suggestions cos its with a garage, but i'll pass it on as I really dont think this garage is gonna find the problem (they have had a week already...)

Basically for the past 6 or so weeks it has *sometimes* failed to start. It turns over but doesnt catch, then usually it catches on the second time. A week ago it simply wouldnt start, was tried for ages but then they gave up, it then started first time 5 or so hours later.

A few odd things have also happened inside, the little radio pod LCD thing's backlight has died and the steering wheel volume controls have stopped working also.

My first guess is a sticky starter motor but the garage hasnt mentioned that and im sure that would be about 3rd on the list for a starting problem.

Now presuming this isnt something as stupid as a fuse (which imo the internal problems are going to be but surely any garage would have checked that??) plus the intermittent nature of the starting problem doesnt suggest fuse, anyone got any suggestions? :)

Stupid question, but have they tried a new battery?

My stereo controls were acting a bit odd and also the trip comp was just resetting itself overnight sometimes, new battery cured it all.

It wouldnt suprise me if it hasnt been checked no, hes added it to the list of things to ask the guy to whack a voltmeter on :)

does sound very much like a battery problem, had a similar problem with an escort i had, even when it eventually started (after jumping) i still couldn't use the electric windows, cd player, or heater, new battery sorted it

it certainly sounds like it could be sensor related but im also skeptical to believe soemthing like the steering wheel controls dyign at around the same time is a coincidence.

He is reading this though and will have added to the list of things to bug the guy with, sounds like the mechanic needs a bit of spurring on anyway!
