£2000 for your old car.

It's not the garage that pays out the 2k, it's the government. They would have no reason to bump up the price of what you're buying. That's the whole reason for the scheme! To shift metal and get some cash flow going.

Which will no doubt be arranged through the dealer networks, dealer takes old car off you, here is the 2k towards the deal sir / adjust new car price accordingly, otherwise everyone would need to deal with the Gov and get the cash for the car prior to any deal with the garage which isn't going to happen.

Its exactly the same system the dealers use for scrapping cars now except the value of those scrapped cars could now increase to 2k instead of £150 or whatever scrap is now valued at, the punter won't see the money directly and thus has means to be abused by the dealer network.

Under the scheme cars over nine years old could be scrapped in return for a £2,000 cash incentive towards a new or nearly new vehicle.

I've read the above as it will be done through the network otherwise how could you control how the person spends the 2k, Unless you can provide me with a quote that states otherwise.

Exactly. They're not just going to give you £2000 cash for parking a N reg fiesta next to the crusher. The dealer would apply the discount and claim it back from the government. You wouldn't actually see any cash.

C'mon people, common sense.

You could probably make some money out of this. Buy scrappy car 200 quid. get 2k from this organisation. Buy nearly new car for 20k or whatever. Sell said car straight away, keep 2k organisation has supplied.

Except that a new car costing £20,000 loses more than £2k the minute you drive it off the forecourt?

:confused: How about the fact that you'd need to buy a new or nearly new car for each £500 car?

Not hard, by a nearly new car, then sell it straight away.

You could also use it to get a 2k discount on any ranndom new car you choose to buy, providing it doesn't make it more espensive by getting rid of existing dealer discounts. Just buy a banger and cash it in, and you have an instant ~2k off any new car

Surely it would have to be limited to certain types of cars? Or I could cash in a Fiesta for 2k off a Hummer, which clearly isn't going to help the environment.

yantersen, for the sanity of everyone in this thread PLEASE have some sort of substance to your opinions before spouting them. These schemes are in operation in the EU already, go and have a google and see how they work and you'll discover why you cant buy bangers to get thousands off a new Hummer.

Please read other peoples replies and apply some thought to this!

1) Why would someone buy a nearly new car from you when they can get their own £2000 discount and get a car with full dealer warranty?
2) Privately sold cars fetch less money than similar ones sold through a dealer for the above reason.
3) When you start selling numerous cars you effectively become a trader and suffer all the financial disadvantages this entails.

this will mean all cheap 9 yo cars will end up scraped for £2000 leaving very few bargain/run around cars for people who can't afford any more :(

This could work very well.

It would certainly cause my mother to purchase a new or nearly new car.

I beleive there are many people in her situation:

- Enough money for a new car
- Too sensible to scrap current old car and buy a nearly new one

This cash incentive is enough to push people over the edge by offering an incentive, instead of keep paying out for repairs etc.

Saying that, this scheme goes against everything the government have said concerning greenness

Really, greenness seems to be about the following;

Increasing tax on motorists,
Giving local government nitwits the chance to empire build,
Keeping people buying new cars,
Making vehicle manufacture standards more complicated, to prevent competition from India and China.
