2000 or XP for oldish Laptop?

Windows XP is quite painful with anything less than 512mb.

My machine at work has a CellyD 2.26GHz CPU and 256mb RAM and only just copes with XP, but my sister and step sister both have XP on their P3 1GHz laptops, both with 256mb RAM and I don't get any complaints from them.

i'd recommend 2000 anyday it would run a lot faster. I prefer it to XP so much i use it on a 3Ghz 1gb ram machine!!

There seems to be a small group or 'cult' if you will of people who still prefer 2000! Dont get me wrong it was a good OS!

In the case of this machine, I would say you could use XP, but turn off Visual themes etc.

I have a Celeron 1.7GHz and 256MB RAM work fine on XP pro SP2. However both good OS's, just 2000 is dated now

Sounds like 2000 would be the better option here, but if you had the CD and CD key for XP you could try nLiting it and removing all the rubbish and bloat so that the XP install is smaller and uses less memory?

XP with everything turned off < 2000.

Run 2000 on my experimental computer, it's not fussy, just works better.

A slightly tuned XP ran exactly the same speed as 2000 (subjectively of course) on an old PII-400 with 256MB of RAM I have. However functionality is much better on XP (wireless connection worked a lot better for starters) so I stuck with XP :)
