doubt you'll need 12GB of ram tbh, and i would stay away from the Seagate Barracudas, theres some driver issues going round

from the little im picking up it seems pretty awesome, but eeek 12gig of ddr3 seems kinda ott, but what the hell, if you can afford it, what harm can it really do? xd

btw a noobie question, will vista recognise all 12gigs of that? i think i remember reading something about using more than 2 sticks you get massive loss? something about dual channel

You could even go SLI ;>

Or few raptors?

For 4GB+ of ram just install 64bit ;>

Seems a bit overkill to me, £2000 is a lot of money, but hey it's your cash not mine!

Personally i'd swap out the Seagate drive, totally lose the SSD in favour of a velociraptor and spend the cash you've saved on a blue ray drive instead of DVD-RW, plus one of the more expensive lian li cases if you really want to show off.

If you're gonna be on Vista64, the 12GB ram is a good choice. Switch off any virtual memory and make the pc utilise all that ram.
As soon as you do any kind of audio/video converting or set up any virtual machines it'll come into play.

Thanks for all the replies....well most of them!! ;)

I thought the 12GB was a good price, as has been said not sure if it'll ever be used, but better to have it than not.

What is peoples views on the hard drives, at £700 for the 2 will I notice a huge difference of the raptors?

I don't change pc's often, but when I do I want to get a top-of-the-range system that will do me for the next 2-3 years.

Also is it worth the extra going for the nvidia gtx295 over the 4870 X 2 ?

Thanks again for all the ideas, it's given me plenty to think about.

This is my dilemma too, check my thread. I'm undecided but as the prices of SSDs are dirt cheap and falling I'm leaning towards them.

Need to do a bit more research as to how they'll perform in RAID0 with the chipset. Of course I'm going to complement the SSDs with plain SATA drives for storage.

I'm going to hold off the purchase for a couple of weeks as rumour has it that SSD prices are about to drop a little.

ps I'm looking at the OCZ Virtex range. The Intel Extremes are out of my price range

Go with a plain sata drive, sammy or wd are good.
If you hold off the ssd's, even for just a couple months youll get a more mature, stable and mass-tested product at a better price. The plain jane sata will more than suffice meanwhile.

The raptor's, while very good, wont compete with the ssd in terms of performance and have a very poor bang-for-buck ratio.

Cue the onslaught of irrate raptor owner's!
Not knocking them, they been king of the jungle for long long time but time now we move to next gen solid state storage with the resukting performance gains we all deserve.
Nuff said....

Like others have said you won't use all of it, most people on here are using 4gb DDR2 and don't need anymore. Unless you plan on using ram heavy programs, lots of encoding etc, then 6gb is more than enough. Though you seem set on getting 12gb and at the price it's at just go for it.

The SSD's will be a lot faster there's no doubt about it, it's reflected in the price. They are the future of storage, but cost a lot more than standard hard drives. I don't know if they are worth the premium as some hard drives are pretty fast as it is. I won't be going near them until they become mainstream and have pretty much replaced the hard drive. But that's me :p I have a raptor as my boot drive, bought it 2nd hand for not a lot, only way I was ever getting one and do notice a difference, not huge though. The raptors won't compare with the SSD's.

Everyone wants the best they can get, the problem with computers are the very best is constantly changing, new graphics cards out every 3-4 months, newer, faster CPU's etc but it should last you a decent amount of time, just won't stay the best for very long :p

The performance of both is very similar, so in my opinion paying an extra £100 for the 295 is silly. Some people though hate ATi, why, I have no idea. So they will go for a 295 and will pay the premium just so they don't have to go with ATi. I've went from an 8800gt to a 4850 then onto what I have just now, a GTX280. I found no problems with either side, drivers worked perfectly and no issues.

Ok I've been reading - lots! - and decided to wait for ssd drives to come down in price. I've got my latest spec below. I have a 24" IIyama monitor, but will be looking at getting a 30" monitor soon.
What are the views on this spec? I would like the ability to play games at 2560 x 1600, would I be better off spending the extra on the gtx295?

Thanks for all the help :D

Well nobody said it wouldn't work so all the bits have been ordered, everything has arrived except the mobo/cpu bundle which will be here Monday.

Fingers crossed I can build it...

Now to decide on which monitor to go for, have a 24" Iiyama, but quite fancy going to 30"...apart from the cost !!

Thanks, I did think about the raptors, but thought I would save the money until the ssd's get cheaper.

I have a 24", 19" and 17" monitor just now - i like my monitors, I use a 28" hanns-g at work, size wise it's great, but as the iiyams is the same resolution, but smaller it looks sharper.

I fancy something as big as the hanns-g - or bigger - that has the quality of the iiyama.

Just unpacked the delivery, couldn't believe the weight of the graphics card!!!

Thanks for all the feedback, just finished building the pc :)

I installed Windows 7 beta and 3DMark06 and got a score of 22613...which I think is pretty good...I hope lol

Thanks again...Just to decide which 30" monitor to go for, and get a desk big enough for it to fit lol
