I was just wondering how much you guys would pay for a 1.4 2001 Golf?

It's 3 door, has perfect bodywork and 72k KM on the clock which is about 45k miles.

My dad took it for a test drive and showed it to an independent mechanic for a quick look-over who thought it was fine.

The dealer is asking £4500 for it... but it has been on sale for months so the price could be reduced a lot.

thanks in advance!

Something like that in the UK would fetch £2000 up to £2750. If you are set on the Golf I would strongly suggest that you try and find one with a bigger engine as the 1.4 only has 74BHP which is nowhere near enough for a car this size/weight.

the maximum engine size that i can get insured with is 1.4, which is why my dad sold his old car (I'm only 17)

the alternative at the moment is a 2006 punto (old shape) for £5k (and i would prefer the golf)

there is a bit of a shortage of second hand low powered cars in Gibraltar so we don't really mind paying a bit extra.

thanks for the quick replies

Put it this way, i'd be offering around 2K-2.5K... It's 8 years old, fair enough it may be immaculate, but it's far from £4.5K immaculate.

We can't really help as it's a different market. If it fits your needs, seems mechanically sound and you can afford it then go for it. Just try and keep it mint, that way you can make minimal losses when selling it on.

thanks for the advice everyone.
i know it's a different market so different cars are gonna be less/more popular/expensive than in the uk.

i might go for it if we can get a good deal on the insurance

It's not a bad car at all, just a little underpowered as Janesy said. But for a first car, that isn't going to matter massively.

Just try and get them to come down a fair whack on it, try to pay no more than about £3K if possible. :)

Oh and for the love of god, get some quotes BEFORE you start making offers on it so that you know it's reasonable. ;)

I had a 99 1.4 mk4 golf in white, nice motor for the first 6 months to a year as said a little underpowerd and not the best equiped but still good. Its now been used by my mum and dad and has done 147k motorway miles.

Reliable yes, still solid inside with minimal rattles. if you can haggle abit I would go for it.

update: my m8 bought the golf, he paid a bit less than £4500 i think

he let me take a few photos of it ;)

Wow thats really not very much car for £4500, but I guess if thats what the market is like...

I sold my Golf 1.6SE for £3500 somehow! It was lower mileage, bigger engine and spec and probably less owners..... I don't know how a dealer can justify £4500 for a 1.4 nearly a year on!

As I said when I sold mine, price it and somebody will pay it.

Got my X reg 1.4 Golf for £4000 back in feb. Only had 37500miles and was mint, which is why it was quite expensive.

You still paid £1500 too much. In fact parkers puts down a value of £2000 for an Indy dealer :/

But I can see why an average of 3,500 miles a year is so appealing to a buyer. Mmmmm short journeys :)
