hey guys,
so i bought a 2001 yamaha YZ125 just before xmas knowing it needed some TLC.
the guy says to me before i bought it "it runs fine mate, just need some new grips and a tidy up"... well turns out it needed a lot more than that.
when i bought it home i had the rear end, suspension and wheels off the bike, so i started jotting down bits and bobs that i needed to order.
at this point i left the engine as it started and revved up fine, and i ordered all new bearings and seals for the chassis wheels and linkage, as well as new throttle and clutch cable and air filter.
few days pass and i pick up my parts from the shop, return home and fitted it all to the bike, started the bike hoping to have a little run up and down my street to test it out only to find both radiators had no coolant it at all! and the clutch felt real tight/sticky.
so i fill the radiators up with water as i did not have any coolant at this time, started the bike again and it sounded like a strimmer! the head o-ring had gone! and the radiators started leaking
i managed to source some radiators and blue hose kit from a place called GPI racing on ebay £75+postage from the Netherlands and they look bad ass! lol
so i brought the bike back in popped it back on the stand and started stripping the top end only to find out there was no o-rings on the head at all! and the cylinder was scrap... so i found a chap on Facebook that races a 2002 model of my bike and have a space cylinder that needed replating at lancourts.
he kindly gave me it for free as well as the 2002 power valve blades. As the engine was out the bike i thought i would have a look at the clutch while im at it... AGAIN thats scrap, my dads friend is a spares van guy at local MX tracks so i gave him a call and told him what i needed as he son sorted me out with very good parts and amazing price, i got a wossner forged piston kit and a talon clutch basket with a clutch kit, complete gasket and oil seal kit.
thank god the bottom end was fine, but it still needed a lot of money spent on it, its cost me about £1800 now thats including the bike as well.
but its now all back together and runs spot on, clutch it nice and smooth, top end is fresh and sounds crisp, i took it out for a quick blast up my road to make sure it was ok and JESUS CHRIST! im way to light for it, ive had many MX bikes before but this is my first YZ and its lethal, revs so fast and it hard hitting right off the bottom lol, not only that, its not even run in yet and i have a full FMF race exhaust on order for it.
i have a cagiva mito evo 2 and i was expecting the YZ to have the same amount of power but just accelerate quicker but in fact, the YZ dominates it in power, i love my new to my YZ125, just a shame the weather is still crap to take it out.
so yeh, cheap project was slightly annoying but turned out amazing in the end!
