Im looking for a second car mainly for use by my girlfriend going to and from work, and the odd day out to the cinema etc.

We currently have a joint owned Honda s2000, which i drive to work and back, but i dont like leaving it anywhere and refuse to park it when we go out etc and on a weekend im that obsessed that i wake up to get to the supermarket as soon as it opens so no one is likely to go near the s2000, so we are looking for a second car for her to drive that is more practical and we are not afraid to park up and get it dinged.

I like the look of the Honda accord, and have seen a seemingly nice looking one on a 2005 plate 2.0 petrol executive model 80k miles, full service history, we are not doing many miles with her trip to work probably less than 2 miles.

Any reason not to go for the accord? anyone owned one and know of any common problems to look out for?

Budget is around £2-2.5k

My dad has one. A 2005 2.0 Executive in fact. He's had it for a few years and it's not put a foot wrong. Excellent build quality, comfortable, drives nicely and the engine is superb. Go for it.

Because Honda callipers, I'd ask a garage to clean up the brakes and silicon grease the slider pins.

Your not going to find a 2005 Accord for 2-2.5k, they are expensive and will be holding their value since they discontinued Accord in Europe.

The Accord also seems a bit overkill, you would be much better off getting a 7th gen Civic, you can get a nice top spec 2.0 Type S for that sort of money.

Check for unevenly worn tyres, the alignment can be an issue. Other than that they're pretty bullet proof and much better put together than the civic in terms of build quality

Did it all on my s2000, including replacing the rear calipers so shouldnt be problem

Sounds like theirs not much to worry about going to take a look this thursday and if we can strike the right deal and its as good as the advert suggests then i think we will buy it

There are 39 petrol accords sub 10 years old for less than 3k on AT, indeed 2-2.5k seems about the going rate for a nice 2005

I found around 2 2005 petrol Accord 2.0 version and only one of them, the one you linked is an Exec model. There are some serious badly maintained s**** out there, one of them on their has been on sale for nearly a year. If you want a really nice one they start from around 3k.

My Accord is reaching 150k Miles and still feels tight, it passed its MoT last week with no advisories and its a great car.

Still looks great for its age, interior has very minor wear and no annoying rattles or squeaks, such a well put together car.

imo, i'd be looking at the 2.4 as I've always found that my 2L could do with more power, that's me anyway.

I had a 2004 2.4 Accord Exec auto from new for a few years.
Engine was great and 'VTEC Y0' was great fun, no complaints there. Even though equipment levels were high, I had to call customer services to just check I hadn't missed the fuel economy display, and amazingly it didn't have one..strange.

However, despite Honda's 'reliable' claims, within a year my driver's side headlight failed and had to be replaced and, more worryingly, the entire sat-nav/climate control/radio module failed and had to be completely replaced too.

Obviously both were done in warranty, but the sat-nav module would've been a bit brutal in cost I imagine.

Oh, and I specced the 'sport suspension' option when ordering, which was a massive mistake. Sure it looked great lowered, but the ride quality was appalling. I haven't seen too many with this spec configuration though.

I'm usually first to point out that just because there are crap examples on Autotrader for 50p doesn't mean they are all worth that but in this case come on, 39 of them! It seems quite clear that the going rate is under £3k - many of those 39 will be junk but some of them will not be.

It's a Honda Accord not a Bugatti Veyron, it isn't some sort of valuable out of production super sought after enthusiasts car.

Doesn't sound like the op is massively fussed about whether it's a 2005 car or not, just that he found "an example".

Complete non issue and yes I'd expect there to be reasonable choice for £2.5k

I didn't say they are all valued at 3k, just that a good genuine example is around 3k, i'm just speaking from experience here.

Also as said I assumed originally that he was after a 2005 2.0 petrol etc, but I read that wrong.

Either way all those 39 cars won't even suit his need, 2.4 is overkill for a weekly supermarket run car, so is a large estate.

I doubt there is any practical difference between a 2.4 or a 2.0 for his intended usage - it doesn't really matter which he gets as it's not like there is some sort of specific flaw in the 2.4 is there? His mileage isn't big enough for there to be a credible difference in ongoing running costs. The 2.4 is hardly a rocket is it, it's not like buying an RS4 to go to Tesco in.

It's more expensive to run and it can throw up bills, e.g. the VSA unit tends to go more on these, the 2.0 is pretty much guaranteed to be trouble-free on a well looked after example.

Personally, at this end of the market I wouldn't even bother trying to find a specific engine or trim combination. Buy on condition and history.
Even if the 2.4 is slightly less reliable than the 2.0 (which I don't agree with by the way), a good, well maintained example will be better than a tatty 2.0.

I've got a mate with a 2004 2.4 Exec and it's just ticked over 300,000 miles now. Still pretty tight and doesn't rattle.

Age does not really bother me too much as long as its the new style ones which i think are 2002+ also engine is not too much of a concern either, theirs two im looking at in the morning so will wait and see how it goes, will post pictures if we get it.
