I'm planning to build a monster in 2007, it's been two years since I maxxed out on building a PC (is still doing it's job incredibly well, but that's no excuse for not building a new one!).

I'm sure many of you are doing the same in 2007.

Of course, we know 2007 brings some major change in software and hardware. There's Vista and DX10 for a start. But I don't want to start a debate on whether it's worth waiting until that's been out a year, or whether it'll be good or bad..

Simply, what components will be hot for your new system in 2007. What are you planning to incorporate at this stage (and it's likely to change in the next few months, but have a guess).

Personally I've not had time to keep up with changes in all areas of hardware lately. I know there are some powerful CPU's in 2007, and things like the G80 coming out. But that's about it. So if you want to share your wisdom over components here it might prove very exciting for some of us that haven't kept up with change.

Hope this was a good idea anyway. If not, please limit the flaming to 'grilled whopper', I'm just trying to gather information! :D

for most i guess it will be to move to Conroe (maybe Quad Core)

and a new DX10 graphics card ...

for me, its a complete box built around the above.

No concrete plans as such. It really depends on what hardware becomes available, and at what price point.

I've just bought a 7900GTO so (barring any dramatic change in gpu pricing) I probably won't be changing that until 2008. Remind me of that this time next year, as lately I seem to be upgrading my card every year....

On the system side, I'm currently running a s939 3000+ setup so I would guess there is a chance that I switch to a conroe rig next year, if I find that only having 1gig RAM gets problematic. Or, if DDR/X2 prices drop a lot then I might look at sticking with my current mobo, moving to 2gig and a 5000+ or similar.

With DX10 hardware/software still not available, I think it's unlikely to because necessary (or even highly desirable) until 2008. Developers are not going to risk alienating the massive installed base of dx9 hardware in the near future.

I would wait until the 3rd line of DX10 cards or something like that and possibly build a whole new rig.

I also have the 7900 GTO which should arrive tomorow, along with the power supply. Then I plan to get 2GB RAM so there is no bottle necks.

I like most people on here am permanently planning a new rig it's just finiding the cash to put these plans into action that prevents us! Mine is comming up to it's first birthday and I've got the upgrade bug if I could get a cheap X2 or dual core opty then I would but really I want to go conroe just can't face taking the big hit on selling my ram mobo and cpu!

I think most of us have already built new systems over the past 3 months based on the "Conroe" cpu.

The only upgrading that I'll be doing in 2007 is possibly getting a DX10 gfx card and Vista. I'd say it'll be 2008 before we see anything that competes with a conroe (multi cores excluded).

For 2007 it will be:

Quad Core Cpu
DX10
Vista

Not sure whether i will be jumping on the g80/r600 bandwagon. Depends on how much they cost, benchmarks and how much i can sell my old card for.
