Are we expecting any more jumps in the CPU world from either AMD or Intel? Will any faster processors be released that are worth waiting for?

Maybe K8L, a quad core chip based on a slightly warmed up K8. Real world performance unknown. Also possibly a 45nm process shrink of Conroe called Penryn, which may increase cache from 4mb, to 6mb, and may have a native quad core version (could have up to 12mb shared cache). Lots of 'maybe' with Penryn though, although the first Penryn has been taped out and even boots windows, there's no way to know for sure if intel will get it running native quad.

However, most applications are still hardly utilising dual core, let alone quad, and there is no real evidience to say that K8L's will be much better than K8's for single threaded applications, or that Penryn will be better than Conroe.

Penryn is however targetted to max out at 3.73Ghz.

Personally I but a Core 2 Duo, and wait until 2008 before looking at something better. But its possible that AMD will pull a rabbit out of the hat, and K8L will be a big step. If it is you can be assured intel will get Penryn out faster as they want to keep the performance crown this time.

Historically AMD dont do total redesigns. They evolve gracefully from one generation to the next. I dont believe the whole 'K8L' marketting reasons excuse. If they didnt want to use the name K9 they could have gone directly to K10, or changed the code name entirely.

Maybe K8L will be more than just a native quadcore improved K8, but there is no real evidence either way. AMD have kept it all very close to their chests.

Either way it doesnt matter, it will need to be a massive improvement to threaten Core 2 Duo, and its not like Intel are resting on their laurels. They are working on a 45nm process, an new system bus similar to HT (Its called CSI), experiments with both integrated memory controllers, but also a different design where the entire north bridge is connected to the cpu rather than the motherboard, so they can upgrade the memory controller without changing the main cpu wafers.

Whatever, I still dont believe 2007 will be as exciting as 2006 was. Conroe is a great chip.

whilst conroe is indeed a great chip (pity i cant say the same for its maker...) again i have to say your a little off with regards to intel keeping things to themselves, there are many many in depth reviews out there of K8L the reason why no ones botherd mentioning them is due to the fact that at present we have no real time bench marks for it. however if youd like to take a peak, ive dug up the most in depth, best report for you from a reputable source.

enjoy :)

Penryn is dual core. It will never be a native quad core part. There will of course be Penryn chips which consist of two Penryn dies stuck together.

wrong, its a total redesign. its only called K8L for marketing reasons.
Wrong. It's the K8 in quad core form with core logic enhancements to improve IPC. Similar to how Conroe was a suped up Dothan. It is increasingly looking likely however that the K8L's IPC may exceed that of the Conroe. Which is why Intel has Yorkfield and Wolfdale coming...

The next major architecture revamp from AMD is still quite up in the air. Nobody really knows what it will entail. But you can bet it will be something along the lines of those "Fusion" chips and much more.

i stand corrected ;) by you both in a way :p

One thing that does worry me about K8L is that it still isn't sampling. If people are expecting to buy these thing by July then it would have been sampling yesterday but it isn't.

as far as i can assertain sampling may not take place untill aprill :( they may not be available for sale untill late Q3.

That's the thing. April is the same sort of time I'd expect Yorkfield to start sampling too - which (assuming K8L is April too) means there'll be a clash of the titans at the end of the summer. Happy days for us consumers though :D

In other news, bad times for AMD investors: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2007/01/12/amd_q4_earnings_forecast/

yea i already saw, 10% slide in shares. there still profitable mind, just not as profitable as forecast mainly due to the price war they are both in at the moment, intels expected to be in a similar situation too.
