2008 Focus TDCi - Increased vibration/humming at idle

Ahoy Ford owners of motors.

The Mrs has just called me to say that her car has started making a noticable hum with vibration through the gear stick.

There's no clonking, the clutch isn't slipping and gears are easy to select.

Any thoughts/ideas? Whilst obviously not immediately bad, I can't help but think this is the start of DMF failure...

Could be DMF, engine/gearbox mount failing or something causing the engine to run rough.

I think these use an oil filled mount on the drivers side which if the rubber cracks all the oil leaks out and you get a big increase in vibration.

If the noise/vibration changes when the clutch is depressed, that's pointing towards DMF.

I can't remember the last time I drove a manual diesel that didn't vibrate the gear stick as standard?

Oh, well I'm sure everything is fine then. :p

In all seriousness it sounds like it's more than just your usual idle vibrations, for her to pick up the phone and give me a call it's got to quite severe.

Awesome, I'll check those additional points tonight when I get home. Better to check from top, or under the car?

I'll get her to check the clutch pedal noise in a tick.

The main mount is right on the top of the engine, bolted to the block just in front of the timing belt cover. If you've got an oily patch running down the inner wing that's a tell tale sign.

If the gearbox mount has gone you'd usually notice it when changing gear more than at idle.

Check for excessive movement of the engine my bringing the clutch up as if you're going to move off but with the handbrake on. The engine will always move a little, but you should be able to tell if it's excessive.

Which engine is it - 1.6/1.8/2.0?

Nice one, thanks.

It's the 1.8. We recently had a split boost hose replaced, but I think that was down to the rubber perishing but now you've mentioned movement I can't help but think it might be related.

In my 57 reg 2.0 TDCI Focus the engine made an awfully rough noise when I was ever so slightly touching the clutch pedal (which also vibrated quite violently) when the DMF was dying.
The clutch was also swarfed up as the DMF had been dancing around due to excessive play. If your DMF is buggered then you really should have a new clutch too as there will be £0 labour for that!

Keep us posted with your findings, but a new clutch and DMF will cost £700-800 fitted, with £100 more if you need a new clutch slave cylinder.

Edit: I believe that LUK made the Ford dual mass flywheels, so buy one of those rather than genuine Ford parts.
