I've read around this and came to the conclusion that it is normal for a laptop battery to suddenly conk out in the middle of use.

A bit puzz;ed as top why the battery meter in windows was reporting correctly as it warned me of less than 7% power levels. But now it seems to have stopped reporting correctly literally overnight and now after about 2-3 hours of use suddently the power will get shut down on the laptop while the battry is reporting 3/4 full.

Is there a way to calibrate the charge sensor so that the laptop (windows 7) gives me accurate battery readings.

The laptop is an aging ul30a.

Not uncommon, most likely a faulty cell. Lithium batteries tend to fail from age from around 4 years in my experience.

Replace it, or learn to live with power off bingo.

Install something like BatteryBar which will show you the battery wear, I suspect that on a 5 year old laptop will be pretty shot. My 9 cell battery on the E6420 is all but dead now at 71% wear.
